My grand-children love imaginative play – and watching them absorb themselves in the stories they create is such a joy. Moreover, being able to get down to play at their level, seeing the world through their eyes, is magical. Toys that fire children’s imaginations not only encourage them to explore new ideas, role play different situations and see the world from different perspectives – they are also enormous fun! So, I was delighted to have the opportunity to review the Tikit Wooden Farm Set, alongside my 3 ½ year-old animal-loving grandson. I just knew he would love it!
The item arrived very well wrapped in sustainable packaging material. The farm set box itself felt very good quality and the contents are attractively depicted on the outside of the packaging. Once we’d snipped through the adhesive tape, I supported my grandson to open the box to reveal the contents inside. Each beautifully fashioned farm set piece was nestled in its own little space in the box – lined with paper ‘straw’. Even from that first impression, we were immersed in the farmyard!
I encouraged my grandson to get out all the pieces and set them out. He loved digging into each compartment to see what would come out. He was entranced by the animals, making their noises as he set them out on the table. I do think the initial unboxing will need adult support – unless you don’t mind the paper straw getting everywhere – although by the time we’d finished playing, we had realised it made perfect bedding for the livestock! Tikit have thoughtfully included a smart cotton drawstring sack to store the farm set when not in use. I particularly liked this touch as I hate to see toy-set pieces get lost in the bottom of the toy box.
The quality of the farm set is outstanding; it feels really robust and durable. Beautifully crafted from FSC-certified beechwood, each piece is deliciously tactile – especially the little sheep! The set comprises a fully working tractor and trailer, a farmer and scarecrow and a delightful collection of farmyard animals: horse, cow, pig, duck, chicken – and of course, that sheep! Four fence panels are also included to complete the set. Every one of the figures is beautifully observed – smooth and well-finished – and just the perfect size for little hands. The most is made of the wood’s natural grain with the delicate addition of faux leather manes, ears and farmer’s beard – with just a little pop of colour from the tractor and the chicken’s comb and beak.
As we played together, I asked my grandson what he thought of the farm set. He said he liked the tractor best – and “the way the piggy rode round and round on the trailer”.
This is just the kind of gift I like to buy my grandchildren; beautiful, sustainable and with a play value that goes on and on. When I first learned of the price for the farm set, I thought it sounded a little on the expensive side, but the sheer quality, beauty and hand-feel of each piece won me over. I now believe it to be a fair price-point for an item of such high quality.
All in all, my grandson and I thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Tikit Wooden Farm Set. I know he will choose it to play with again and again. It’s great to see that Tikit have other products that can expand and compliment the farm set. This is something I’ll be looking into for future birthdays or Christmases. A simple, beautiful, quality item that’s a pleasure to play with.
