Having two small children, I’m always on the lookout for something new to keep them entertained on the go, whether it’s a long car journey, a train ride, or even a quick trip to the local supermarket, I jumped at the chance to review the Spirograph Travel Set and Flip ‘N’ Trix travel toys. With little ones, I genuinely believe the smallest distractions can make the biggest difference, so I was keen to see whether these compact, child-friendly toys could offer a bit of peace on our travels!
These travel toys arrived well packaged, in bubble-wrap and an outer plastic envelope and inside the items were in pristine condition. When my son got home from school, he was so excited to play with both, he couldn’t decide which one to open first.
Being a child of the 80s, the Spirograph Travel Set instantly filled me with nostalgia with all those happy childhood memories of colourful spirals and endless doodles flooding back. So naturally, we opted to open this one first. And what a neat little toy it is. The bright green and blue plastic case with a built-in design ring, cleverly conceals a storage compartment containing:
• 6 bright pink design wheels
• A 24 page pad
• 2 mini pens in blue and red
• Mini Spirograph design guide.
The lid slides round really easily with one layer enabling the paper to be positioned in place and the other layer revealing the storage compartment.
We placed one of the sticky notes into the grooves and then chose one of the design wheels and off we went into a design frenzy. Honestly, my son couldn’t get enough of it, to the point that the next morning I was off to the supermarket to fetch some more sticky notes for his creativity to continue!
I love the fact that everything is tucked neatly into this compact little case and it fits perfectly in my son’s hand and slips easily into any bag when we’re heading out. There’s something so satisfying about a toy that’s genuinely travel‑friendly. This one is sturdy, self‑contained, and mess‑free, which is an absolute winner in my eyes!
It’s great that the sticky pad can be replaced by sticky notes, which are readily available at all good supermarkets and stationers- and in lots of different colours too. The only issue with the one that was supplied was that they were slightly more sticky than usual and left a little glue residue on the paper.
With an RRP of £8.99, I think it’s great value too. In fact, as it’s so reasonable, I’m going to be getting my daughter one too, just to make absolutely sure that peace reigns on our travels and they don’t end up squabbling about who’s going to play with it.
After we’d finally managed to tear ourselves away from the Spirograph, my son couldn’t wait to dive into the Flip ’N’ Trix toy. This one is completely different in style and design, being more of a digital fidget game, but it turned out to be just as much of a hit as the Spirgograph.
The toy itself is small (not much bigger than a real coin), lightweight and perfectly sized for little hands, which immediately makes it ideal for travel. It’s so small, it can be carried in a pocket or a bag.
With a simple digital screen, a single button and 3 different game modes, including a flip counter, random number generator and a digital heads or tails style game, it’s the kind of toy that takes seconds to understand but as with most fidget toys, quickly becomes strangely addictive and competitive.
One thing I really appreciated as a parent is the robust rubber impact case it comes with. It gives the toy a reassuring layer of protection against the inevitable rough handling that comes with over excited kids. Ours survived several enthusiastic flips onto the kitchen floor without so much as a mark, which is definitely a win!
My only concern with it is that, although it’s small and easy to transport, it does need a bit of space to reach its full potential. In a car or on a train you’re slightly limited by the roof or nearby seats and there’s always the risk of it hurtling towards another passenger, which isn’t ideal. But used at home, at a playdate or out in the school playground, it’s brilliant fun and a great way to get kids playing together without a screen in sight.
Another big bonus for me is that, although it’s digital, it doesn’t make a sound. No beeping, no tinny music, no repetitive tune slowly driving you mad. It’s quiet, simple and surprisingly engaging.
With an RRP of £5.99, it’s a perfect little gift for any child, especially with the long summer holidays looming (sorry for the reminder!)
Overall, we were absolutely delighted with these fab little toys and can’t recommend them highly enough. I’ll be telling all my friends about these great ideas for keeping little ones entertained.
