The Higgidy brand was born back in 2003, when co-founder Camilla Stephens discovered a pie-shaped gap in the market and set out to create and deliver tasty, healthy, homemade pies. Having always loved cooking, Camilla continues to this day to work in the Higgidy kitchen with the team producing not only pies, but other yummy savoury snacks and treats.
The Higgidy website states that their ethos is to bake delicious, wholesome food that is better for people and our planet.
With that in mind, the offer to sample and test four products from the Higgidy festive seasonal “Merry & Moreish” range, was a role that I was very quick to volunteer my taste buds for! My family were also super eager to try these out, too, so we decided to have a family tasting evening session.
First up to be tested, were the limited edition festive “Merry & Moreish” twin packs and we got to try the two flavours, these included, ‘Pigs in Blankets Inspired Sausage Rolls and French Brie’ and also the ‘Cranberry Veggie Rolls’. Both were very moreish! The Pigs in Blankets is a variation of your ‘normal’ sausage roll, made from British outdoor-bred pork sausage meat, bacon jam and extra mature Cheddar cheese, all wrapped up in all-butter puff pastry and topped off with extra mature Cheddar cheese, parsley and dried beetroot crumb, which was bursting with flavour at ‘first bite’.
The ‘French Brie and Cranberry’ option is the perfect choice for the vegetarian in your life, because this veggie roll, is packed full of French Brie and extra mature Cheddar cheese with dried cranberries, and is also wrapped in all-butter puff pastry and topped off with extra mature Cheddar and Emmental cheese, millet seeds and dried beetroot crumb. So tasty! These, can be eaten cold from the pack or heated through, and as we were home we popped them in the air fryer to warm them up by following the instructions on the packaging.
My opinion is that these are an easy ‘go-to’ option because they are convenient and versatile for snacking, lunches, or festive parties, they are also available in various fillings and as stated before can be enjoyed hot or cold, depending on your preference. Interestingly, they are also part of the meal deal ‘snack’ option at the moment in Sainsbury’s, Boots, Tesco and WHSmith.
Next up to be ‘taste tested’ by the family was the pack of “Merry & Moreish” ‘Extra Mature Cheddar & Spinach Mini Muffins with a pinch of Chilli’. These are a savoury bite-sized muffin made with free-range eggs, mature Cheddar cheese and spinach, butternut squash purée, grated carrot and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Nom, nom! And they are just the perfect snack for when you are feeling a bit peckish as they are packed with flavour. I’d suggest that these mini muffins would make a perfect addition to a festive ‘graze’ board.
Finally, the ‘Merry & Moreish’ ‘Beechwood Smoked Bacon & Extra Mature Cheddar Quiche’. A classic version of everyone’s favourite quiche. Higgidy use outdoor-bred British bacon in their recipe. Using lardons that are smoked with real beechwood, which lends them a wonderfully subtle flavour. This is the ideal solution for a lunch or supper between Christmas and New Year when you are fed up with turkey! No more boring leftovers, just deliciousness! Again this can be eaten cold or heated in the air-fryer/oven following the instructions on the packaging.
Purchasing a Higgidy pie, quiche, sausage roll, or in fact, any delicious item from the Higgidy range, that be, either as a snack, a hot meal for one or a quick easy family meal, brings a little bit of ‘loveliness’, mainly because the creative team in the Higgidy kitchens have taken everyday dishes and given them a fresh twist, which in turn has developed into something quite yummy.
All the Higgidy packaging is designed and illustrated by illustrator Hannah Turpin and can be recycled.
Higgidy have also written cookbooks and even opened a pop-up Higgidy pub for one day last October! Pie and a pint a perfect combination – but where was my invite?!
