Our tent has been erected 3 times already this Summer and with another camping session next week we were very pleased to be able to review the Fabsil Tent Care kit. The kit comes as a two part system for both cleaning and waterproofing so it sounded just the job for our slightly tired looking tent.

When the parcel was delivered it contained a sturdy branded box including 3 items, a vibrant green expanding sponge, a 500ml bottle of Fabsil Universal Cleaner and a 1 litre tin of Fabsil Universal Protector. The side of the box includes a list of instructions for use & some top tips, the first of which is to erect your tent before use.

Two weeks ago, when my son used it to camp in a field with friends, it rained on the last day, so having been hung to fully dry in the shed, the tent was desperately in need of a clean. As per the tips we erected the tent and set to work with the Fabsil Universal Cleaner. The Cleaner is really easy to use, dilute just 2 capfuls with 5 litres of water and sponge on. The two capfuls (100ml) cleaned our large tent, so its great value with a further 4 uses left in the bottle after I had finished. The tent was covered with muddy drips before the cleaner but came up really well after application. Following the instructions, I then left it to dry completely before applying the Universal Protector.

The Fabsil Protector has high strength water repellency combined with UV protection inhibiting sun & weather degradation. It is suitable for fabrics that will be exposed to the elements including, nylon, polyester, cotton canvas, hessian, Gore-Tex and more. Again, it’s easy to apply, you can either paint on, or my choice for speed & simplicity, use a garden sprayer to spray on. I tipped about two thirds into the sprayer and set to work, it hardly took anytime at all and now the tent looks like new. The seams can be done separately with a brush, but I was happy with the application via sprayer, as you need to apply from about 10-15cm away, you can get accurate directional control with just the nozzle. When finished you need to keep away from rain & dew until its fully dry. The 1 litre tin covers 18m2 of nylon, with an average two man tent being 6m2, you can get a large family tent out of the one tin in the kit.

Two things to note are; that the Universal Protector is strong smelling, so you need to apply either outdoors or in a very well-ventilated space, you also need to protect the surrounding area such as grass, tarmac or vinyl windows/doors in case of damage.

These two fantastic products from the long established Fabsil brand can be bought separately or combined as part of the tent care kit. They also do smaller versions if you just want to protect a parasol, sun shade or awning. I found them to be simple to apply, good value for money and most importantly worked well, I highly recommended both.
