Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic book and film that I grew up watching, so I was excited to be able to take my 8 year old son to watch it being performed at Bournemouth Pavilion, especially as he has just read it at school. Being an amateur performance by a local group (BBLOC), I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect as I hadn’t seen one of their productions before, but from the moment it started we were dazzled by the stunning visuals, magical atmosphere, and great cast that captivated us throughout. I had seen a professional production of this show 2 years ago and I can honestly say that the BBLOC production was superior. From the moment the curtain rose, we were transported into the world of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, where imagination runs wild and dreams come true. The set designs were clever, with seamless transitions from the home of Charlie Bucket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

The cast delivered brilliant performances. Special mentions go to Willy Wonka, who had charismatic charm and a rich, melodious voice, and Charlie, being played in this performance by Noah Long – I am sure that he will go far if he wishes to pursue musical theatre for a career. The supporting cast, including the four lucky golden ticket winners and their equally memorable parents, made us laugh a lot and Mrs Bucket had a beautiful voice. Featuring classic songs alongside new melodies, “Pure Imagination” was one of our favourites. The Oompa Loompas were innovatively portrayed, and they stole the show when they first appeared. The choreography was equally impressive, bringing a lively, dynamic energy to the stage.

Bournemouth Pavilion is a lovely theatre right by the sea, with a car park just next door if you’re driving, although it is very pricey! All the buses through the town centre also stop at the end of the road though so it is easy to access by public transport. The seats were comfortable, and we were in the stalls so had a great view. The show lasted for 2 hours plus a 20 minute interval where you could go to the bar for a drink (which you could take into the auditorium) or buy an ice cream or sweet snacks.

What truly sets this production apart is its ability to strike a balance between nostalgia and innovation. The special effects—from the chocolate river to the inventive way each child meets their fate—are executed creatively, making every moment engaging. The final duet between Willy Wonka and Charlie in the glass elevator ended the show on a high! This production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a must-see show for families, theatre enthusiasts, and fans of the original tale. It captures the wonder, humour, and heart of Roald Dahl’s classic story, which left us grinning from ear to ear and made us want to stay in Willy Wonka’s world rather than returning to reality. My son was perched on the front of his seat for most of the show, fully engaged in the performance. I would say the show is suitable for all ages from around 6 years old, and it is now a family favourite. We just wish we could try all the chocolate there!
