So as a little end of the week, post pre-school treat for the little one, we went to The Lowry in Manchester to see Zog Live.
We have quite a few of the Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler books at home and Zog is currently our favourite bedtime story to read!
The show is loosely based on the story from the book, however it has a few adaptations which I’m not quite sure that the children understood as most of the children were below school age and looked a bit confused during those parts as it wasn’t like the story we have heard at home.
The production company however did do an excellent job of bringing the story to life through song and dance. The cast were very good at playing musical instruments and making sound effects, which was something that we haven’t seen in any of the other children’s theatre shows that we have been to. But again, due to the age of the children I’m not quite sure they understood why Zog was playing the guitar and singing songs when he wasn’t in this bit of the story.
The show is only an hour long with no intervals, which is just the right time to keep the age of the audience entertained without them getting restless. At one part of the show the dragons flew around the theatre, through the audience, which was lovely to be able to see them close up.
They didn’t have much in terms of merchandise as the only thing available was a Zog soft toy which priced at £20 was a little over the top and it would have been nice to have had a cheaper alternative, although saying that we did see quite a lot of little ones with one.
Zog is on at The Lowry until the 9th June and tickets are available from https://thelowry.com/whats-on/zog/ although it is touring the country until the 31st August with tickets available from https://www.freckleproductions.co.uk/shows/zog/tour-dates
