What We Did On Our Holiday is a new comedy-drama film from the makers of the very successful television series Outnumbered.
Estranged couple Doug (David Tennant) and his wife Abi (Rosamund Pike) have kept their intending divorce secret from the rest of their families. When Doug’s father, Gordie (Billy Connolly), is having his 75th birthday party they decide to go as a family with their 3 children to Scotland for the celebrations.
While Doug and Abi and trying to behave like a happily married couple they haven’t told the kids to not tell their secrets. And as kids tend to do they tell all about the arguments and living apart.
When Gordie dies on the day of his birthday celebrations the kids decide to honour his wishes and give him a Viking funeral which brings a new set of problems involving social services and the police.
Overall I found What We Did On Our Holiday to be an excellent comedy dealing with family drama, divorce, death and like Outnumbered the kids steal the show, especially the youngest, Jess (Harriet Turnbull), with her pet rocks and outspoken opinions.
Doug and Ali are great as the arguing parents, while Ben Miller is excellent as the brother who has everything but Billy Connolly is the best I have ever seen although he is only in for probably half the film.
A great British comedy that looks at life through the eyes of children.
