My two and a half year old triplet girls were very excited to be going on a trip to the theatre. We travelled by train to Queen Street Station from where you could easily walk to the Theatre Royal on Hope Street but we took a taxi which cost £3-4.
We were warmly welcomed to the theatre and the staff were very helpful, assisting us up and down the stairs. The Theatre Royal is currently undergoing renovation but this does not affect the theatre internally (there are additional toilets are outside). Although the theatre was not full there was a great atmosphere.
What the Ladybird Heard is based on the popular story by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks. The quiet ladybird saves the day by concocting a plan to save the ‘fine prize cow’ from the thieves, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh.
The story is retold through song, dance and puppetry against the farmyard background, where the talented cast were full of enthusiasm and encouraged the children (and adults!) to get involved in the story right from the start. As the girls know the story well, they enjoyed the anticipation of what was coming next , though reading the book beforehand is not necessary to enjoy the show.
The show was bright and colourful and slightly chaotic at times but they seem to have the balance right as the girls sat captivated through the whole performance. What the Ladybird Heard lasted around 55 minutes with no interval which was a perfect length.
Although totally suitable for my girls at two and a half, my five year old would have loved it just as much.
Definitely worthy of five stars.
Tickets cost £13.90 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
