I want to start off by saying that I am not a parent who is very keen on computer games and I constantly have battles with my eldest son about the amount of time that he spends on relatively pointless games on his computer. When I was asked to review the Twelve A Dozen Maths App I had my reservations about my son playing another game. I was soon shown that my preconceived ideas were very wrong.
The Twelve A Dozen Maths App is a game that encourages logical thinking, problem solving and some maths too.
I downloaded the game from ITunes, it was easy to find by searching for the title. It downloaded quickly, the price is very reasonable at £2.99. This is an adventure game with a numerical twist, when you start the game you are a number 12. You progress through the game by answering the maths questions, although they are set out far more like puzzles. I do not think it really occurred to my son he was doing maths questions, he just saw it more as answering puzzles which were necessary to be able to get through to the next levels.
You manoeuvre through each level using the arrow keys, to explore the universe, you have to find scattered numbers which you use to solve the puzzles of addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Once the puzzle is solved it creates a new number which have different powers which help you get further through the game, no 3’s climb, no 7’s explode cages and no 4’s can push and so on. You have to change numbers to use different powers which are appropriate in different stages of the game.
My son did not read the instructions that accompany the game, but this really did not seem to have hampered him in any way. He has been transfixed and has whipped through the levels embracing each mathematical challenge in a way he would not have done if it was in his school maths book! The levels get harder as you progress through the game which has not seemed to have phased him.
After playing the game for a week my son has completed all of the levels. It does however mention that they will be updating the game shortly and new levels will be added. He can’t wait for this and has asked me to check every day if it is released!
I have to say that I have been so very impressed with this game, its very good value for money, it is educational (but in a way which means that kids don’t see playing it as a chore) and puts a very different and fresh approach to maths learning which really gets kids engaged. Please release the new levels soon – I am not sure how much longer my son can wait – he loves it!!
A definite Five Star.
