For our family day out at Thorpe Park we wanted to avoid the rush hour traffic but still be at the park when it opened, so we decided to drive down the night before and stay at the Travelodge in Egham. Going anticlockwise round the M25 we took junction 13 and followed the signs to Egham town centre. Knowing that we were in the vicinity of the hotel, my husband spotted it fairly easily, although I couldn’t see the signs until we had turned into the car park. If you are staying here keep an eye open for Waitrose as this is easy to spot and is right next door.

The hotel shares the underground pay and display car park with Waitrose, although there are special rates which apply to hotel guests ranging from £7.50 between 6pm and 8am or from £8.30 for 15 hours up to £41.70 for 72 hours. You can pay by credit card, debit card or cash. Access to the hotel is by lift or stairs from either the car park or ground level. After 10pm doors are opened by key card or buzzer to reception.

The receptionist was very polite and helpful as she checked us in and gave us the key card to our room. The children were given some colouring sheets and colours to keep them amused. We dropped our bags off in the room and decided to head out straight away to find somewhere to have dinner. The Travelodge does not have its own restaurant so we asked the receptionist for advice. She gave us a map of the town and talked us through the various options. We opted for Caffe Gondola, a lovely Italian restaurant about 3 minutes’ walk from the hotel. The food was delicious, the staff were very pleasant and it was great for the kids. After dinner we went for a short stroll along the high street before heading back to the hotel. We were very conscious that the town is in the flight path for Heathrow and were a little concerned that the noise of the planes would disturb our sleep, however once back in the room we couldn’t hear them unless the window was open.

The family room consisted of a king size bed and 2 roll out single beds for the kids. The beds were firm but comfortable with plump pillows and warm duvets. The bathroom had a shower over the bath and plenty of space to put toiletries. Handwash, shower gel and 4 large bath towels were provided. The shower had 2 levels of water pressure and was ideal for washing the children as it was not a fixed head.

There was a hanging rail with 5 hangers provided, plenty of space to put the luggage, 2 comfy chairs, a sideboard with tea and coffee making facilities and the TV. The hotel offers 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi per day or you can pay for 24hours for £3. Despite having very little signal on our phones we didn’t actually use this service. The room was clean and in excellent condition.

There are numerous choices for breakfast. At reception you can choose between porridge or one of the breakfast boxes or if you prefer you can pop out into town where there are various eateries including Costa, Café Nero, Subway and Greggs. Some people chose to nip down to Waitrose. We decided to try the breakfast boxes (£4.95 each) and the porridge (£1.95). The porridge was easy to make as you just needed to add boiling water. One of the breakfast boxes contained a bowl of cornflakes and milk, a mini muffin, a Nutrigrain breakfast bar and a bottle of orange juice, in the other one there was a yoghurt, a breakfast bar, a tu vita muffin and a bottle of orange juice. There was plenty to fill us up ready for our busy day.

We checked out of the hotel and headed back down to the car park. Within 15 minutes of leaving the hotel we were walking through the gates of Thorpe Park and heading for our first ride. It was definitely worth staying close by overnight.

The 80 room Egham Travelodge has recently been refurbished with a fresh new look and features the Dreamer Bed for a comfortable night’s sleep.
