It seems rather odd reviewing outdoor wear during these strange times. We might be amid a global Covid19 crisis, but that doesn’t stop us venturing out (responsibly) for our daily exercises. I’ve also been spending more time than usual in the garden, as we’ve been fortunate enough to have had some stunning weather in the South West this Spring. I was recently sent the Iconic T1 sun-hat from Tilley to review.
Tilley, founded in Canada in 1980, are primarily known for their head-wear; however they also manufacture a wide range of outdoor lightweight travel items. The T1 was the first hat the company manufactured, so it has both a longstanding pedigree and a loyal fan-base of satisfied customers.
On their website, I followed the easy instructions showing you how to choose the correct size, so when the hat arrived, it fitted perfectly. The item I selected was navy, but they’re also available in black or natural.
Before the item arrived, I thought the price was steep for a sun hat; however, after handling, and wearing this product, I can appreciate why, and it’s worth every penny. You can immediately appreciate the craftsmanship and care taken throughout manufacture purely from the feel.
The T1 is a bucket style hat (a timeless design), made from a highly durable cotton duck fabric. It has a downward-sloping brim which offers protection to the user’s neck, ears and forehead. Although I haven’t worn it in adverse weather conditions, I can see that it will stay firmly fitted in moderate winds due to the integral wind cord.
It’s sun-protective, having a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) of 50+ which is the highest rating available. It’s water repellent (if it’s waterproof you’re after Tilley offer other options). For extra comfort, it has a hydrofil® sweatband to draw moisture away from the wearer. Along each side, it has two large metal grommets which aid ventilation, and if you’re careless, it even floats! There’s a small hidden pocket in the crown. It’s a big enough space for a few small flat items (Driving licence, a small amount of money, credit card, or even a passport).
Tilley is so confident concerning the quality, durability, and reliability of their merchandise, they offer, for most of their products (check individual items) a lifetime guarantee. During regular use, if the product wears out or fails due to a manufacturing defect or quality problem, Tilley will replace it free of charge. To qualify simply register your purchase.
On their website, I was very pleased to read that the company has high environmental credentials, their ethos starts at the very beginning, with responsibly sourcing all materials. Would I recommend this item? Without any doubt whatsoever. You might find something that looks similar for much less, but simply spend a few minutes handling this item, and you’ll immediately appreciate why.
This sun hat, which is equally at home in the garden or trekking around the globe, would make an ideal Father’s day gift, a birthday treat, or why not just be kind to yourself? I’m certainly going to be exploring Tilley’s full range of products for gift ideas.
A well deserved 5 stars.
