Last night my 7 year old daughter and I went to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to see the acclaimed new musical, “The Wind in the Willows”.
We LOVE musicals and as a child I loved reading The Wind in the Willows, so expectations were as high as excitement levels for this production; and not even being out past her bedtime was going to stop my daughter from being my plus one.
We were not disappointed!
Julian Fellowes’ adaptation of the original story teamed with the musical talents of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe really are a match made in heaven. You can see why Producer Jamie Hendry was so keen to put this team together.
The set was relatively simple yet cleverly designed and the costumes perfectly transformed human actors into their animal characters, with tails, hats with ears and some fabulous moustaches all helping to bring the animal characteristics to the fore. I especially loved the stylised “air stewardesses” (the Swallows) and the Wassailing Mice. My daughter liked Mrs Otter and her daughter, Portia!
The story is retold perfectly and just as I remember it, depicting the wonderful friendship of Ratty, Mole, Badger and good old Mr Toad! The “Wild Wooders” (Foxes, Stoats and Weasels) bring just enough air of menace to be mean and nasty without upsetting those in the audience of a more delicate nature (or the children) and there are some wonderfully exciting moments in the second act where the action spills out into the auditorium, really drawing you into and making you part of the story.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, as usual the staff where friendly and helpful and the theatre itself is easy to find with ample parking nearby.
We would highly recommend this musical version of “The Wind in the Willows” to ‘children of all ages’! (especially families with children aged 6 years +, as it was a late night).
Tickets cost from £25 to £47.50 (booking fees may apply).
