“The Smallest Show on Earth” is a musical based on 1957 British comedy movie of the same name that originally was adapted from a story by William Rose.
I saw it at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow, which is one of my favourite theatres in Glasgow with its family homely atmosphere and extremely friendly staff.
The musical is about a young couple Mathew and Jean Spencer and their sudden inheritance of a cinema from a distant relative. Mathew is screenplay writer, who only wrote one screenplay. It has not been that successful and Mathew is hopeful his sequel would be a hit and he would at last be able afford to take his wife on honeymoon to some exotic county.
As soon as Mathew finishes his sequel and the couple are dreaming of becoming rich and famous, Mathew is notified his great uncle has left him inheritance, a cinema called the Bijou. The Spencer’s arrive to a small place Loughborough excited to take over a highly successful cinema just to find out that in fact their inheritance is an old run down place, nicknamed a “flea pit” by the locals. The Bijou came with 3 long standing employees and together, all 5 of them embark on a challenging journey of turning their venture into a successful business.
From the first moment of the show I was mesmerised by the amazing vocals of the actors, their acting skills and their dance routines. I felt I was watching one of all time black and white classics like “Casablanca” or “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. The actors took me onto a breath-taking journey into a different era and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it! The ending of the musical was very uplifting and I was ready to join in with the cast, singing and dancing on stage.
I would definitely recommend the show to all my friends and family! One of the best musicals I have ever seen!
