The Reach Bar and Kitchen at Gallions Reach, Beckton, London is just a short walk from the DLR station, situated on the marina. The area has recently been re-developed, including The Reach Bar and Kitchen, which is housed in a Grade 2 listed building that was once the stop-over hotel for P&O cruise passengers in the 19th Century. The building sticks out like the cherry on top amongst the surrounding architecture, but the restoration inside is sympathetic and welcoming.
Inside, the pub/bar leads into a more secluded room with tables for family meals. We sat in this room, surrounded by the 200 year old architecture. The portion sizes are enormous – that’s the first thing to consider when choosing. We had tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad and prawns to start, which in itself was a meal on its own. The presentation of the food is lovely, and has been well planned. Main course was prawn noodles and hamburger. The hamburger was cooked as required and a healthy size and the prawns were plentiful. I was a little overwhelmed by the volume of the noodles, which along with the chillies was a very powerful meal!
Dessert was creme brûlée and tiramisu. The desserts were a more manageable size, and the choice of desserts was manageable too. They were both lovely, and the staff went to great lengths to make sure we had the correct desserts and enjoyed them! I noticed there were meals for children on the menu too.
All of the staff were knowledgeable on the food on offer, and everything on the menu was available. They were all very accommodating as well. Timing was a little slow throughout the evening, but we were stocked with fresh bread and drinks throughout. The bar and accompanying rooms have been refurbished to a very high standard, making this more than just a pub that does food. This is more gastro pub, where you would come to eat as well as meet friends for a drink. It makes for a great afternoon as the building accommodates small children running around, adults having a drink and something to look at over the marina. The atmosphere was just warming up for a Friday evening, and you could see that this is a hidden gem that will become more popular in time.
Visit The Reach Bar and Kitchen at the weekend for a lazy meal this summer. There are 19 parking spaces or Gallions Reach DLR if you feel like having a few more drinks!
I would go back myself, and the staff would welcome anyone who returns to this new venue with open arms.
