The Pottery Place is a little treasure of a place tucked in the delightful town of Witney.
The location of The Pottery Place is ideal; just a couple of minutes’ walk from a large free car park and situated in Witney High Street, it is easily identifiable from a distance with a giant multi-coloured unicorn stood outside the shop front. A beautiful old building, the downstairs shop area had a wide selection of pottery items for the choosing, all priced so you knew upfront what you were paying.
We chose a small cup, well our two year old daughter chose it and we were escorted upstairs to a lovely open light space set out with tables and chairs. The stairway was in keeping with the quaint feel of the property and probably not ideal for those with physical limitations due to being very steep. There is however a table downstairs so it really is accessible to everyone. The décor was unique and lively, handprints of every size and colour adorned the wall up the stairwell – I was told that they were from people who had held parties at the studio, what a lovely touch, it looked amazing! The stairs were also decorated with bright coloured paper and a glue varnish; an art they facilitate and stock for in addition to the pottery painting. The chair seats were also covered in the same paper artwork.
Beautiful brightly coloured plates, tiles and pots were hung and arranged around the studio giving inspiration and the materials such as the brushes, pots, paints and tables were clean, tidy and well maintained.
We were offered refreshments which were reasonably priced and then a very helpful lady called Molly talked us through the process. She had a lovely manner with children and put our unsure 2 year old daughter at ease. Definitely the right type of person to represent this business; she was friendly and enthusiastic about what she did. All the staff we saw were of a similar fashion, professional and open.
We were sat at the table overlooking the high street and by the window which provided great light and a pleasant view of the town below.
We enjoyed creating our masterpiece and were given lots of tips and suggestions of what else we could add to our painted pottery. Our daughter particularly enjoyed adding her fingerprints to the cup with the help of Molly.
The facilities were adequate and typically sized for this kind of establishment. The toilet was clean and tidy and colourfully decorated.
There was another customer group present at the same time as us but we went at a fairly quiet time, the day before they had held a birthday party and what a fantastic idea for children.
We were there in total for just over an hour which was enough for a toddler and I would return again to indulge both my creative side as well as my daughter’s. I read The Pottery Place also runs adult workshops and I can certainly see the appeal of this.
It was interesting to learn about the firing process and to see the big kiln at the back of the shop. Just one thing to bear in mind; your painted pottery does have to be baked and this isn’t a same day process, you have to return at a later date or as we did, select to pay £5 to have your finished and glazed item delivered to your door.
We can’t wait to see our finished product which will be all shiny bright and adorned with our daughters brush strokes, name, age and fingerprints – a really unique memento and a very enjoyable thing to do.
