Both my husband and I recently visited The Kitchen at The Cross Keys in Epperstone, Nottingham for dinner.

This recently refurbished restaurant is now under new management with Des Sweeney (former Chef to the Royal Family) as Chef and co-manager with Trish. The restaurant is situated in a little country village on the main street, easy to find with ample car parking at the rear, there is even a pony park to accommodate those traveling by horse!

From the outside the restaurant is well signed and beautifully planted with a fabulous decked area and large garden to enjoy beyond the car park. The inside is split into two; the bar/pub side which welcomes muddy feet and dogs and the restaurant side. Both are decorated in a contemporary style and have a very relaxed welcoming feel about them.

On arrival we were greeted by friendly, polite staff who offered a choice of tables. The staff were very accessible, attentive but not intrusive and took our drinks order promptly.

The menu offers a broad range of delicious dishes all of which state they are from fully traceable sources and where possible supplied from local farmers and businesses. After much deliberation we selected the following starters and main courses:

Starters: Pigeon Breast, pan fried with a fresh raspberry and citrus dressing and crisp pancetta, and ‘The Kitchen Garden Salad’ own summer leaves with grilled halloumi, honey, and sesame seeds, broad beans, quail’s egg and local beetroot.

Mains: Chargrilled chicken supreme with chorizo, garden salad and sauté potatoes, and crisp Gressingham duck leg with rich creamed potatoes and red wine jus.

Both the starters and main courses arrived promptly, were beautifully presented and very generously sized. They looked and tasted delicious and were thoroughly enjoyed.

Despite having eaten an ample amount, the dessert menu was too good to pass on. The choices were mouth-watering and following a recommendation we decided on:

Poached pear with mascarpone, and Strawberries and Cream.

We were not disappointed, they were simply divine.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening here and will definitely be returning. The food was beautifully presented, excellent quality, fresh and very tasty. The classic décor and relaxed atmosphere means that this public house easily works well for those dropping in and for those wanting to make more of an occasion of it. The staff were friendly, polite, attentive and efficient. The restaurant and bar offers very good value for money and I highly recommend it if you want good food in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere.
