The Me Me Me’s, Angry Me by Annabelle Neilson Review

Reviewed by Jo Flaherty

Angry Me is, as you might expect, the ‘angriest of the Me Me Mes’. The Me Me Me’s are a collection of characters based on various emotions. The saying goes, never judge a book by its cover, but in this case the cover of the book is beautifully illustrated with Angry Me himself. The illustration, combined with the really tactile cover really grabbed the attention of my children (aged 3 and 8). They couldn’t wait to open the book and find out why Angry Me was quite so… well, angry.

The book really is beautifully illustrated – lots to see on every page, with great detail. Poor Angry Me tells you his woes and the sing-song rhythm takes you along with his on his angry journey. Child or adult, I think anyone would identify with the feelings that Angry Me experiences throughout the book; it’s a great way to talk about the different feelings and emotions, why Angry Me might be feeling the way he does, and what the different outcomes might be.

Halfway through the story we meet some of the other Me Me Me’s – Angry Me’s friends, but we only get to learn one name – Mellow Yellow, who, as the antidote to Angry Me, helps him along the way. We had some fun trying to guess from the illustrations what the other characters might be called.

By the time we reached the end of the story we had followed this little crosspatch through his angry journey; we had sympathised, empathised and chuckled along. It’s a really engaging story, with lots of opportunity to talk through the themes. Despite the difference in their ages, both my kids enjoyed reading this book and wanted to find out about more of the characters. We would have liked to have an introduction to some of the other characters, or even a list of other characters to meet in other books, but we’ll probably seek them out in the next book.
