Tonight I have been to St George’s Hall in Bradford to see The Reduced Shakespeare Company perform The Bible – The Complete Word of God (abridged). The show is performed by 3 comedians who all have their own unique way of entertaining the audience.
The first half of the show is opened by the 3 of them individually appearing in nothing expect a fig leaf, this is then followed by the “in the beginning blues” song which is quite funny and clever. The first half of the show is made up of lots of little jokes and mini sketches re-enacting and comically twisting some of the stories from the bible. They managed to incorporate meanings from the bible and link/compare them to recent event, although I did find some of these quite amusing, unfortunately I did not have same appreciation as the majority of the audience who were laughing hysterically.
Whilst waiting for the 2nd half to start I suddenly became aware of the music playing in the background which was quite amusing and fitted in with the show.
I found the 2nd half of the show far more entertaining. It seemed to have more comedy sketches, I particularly loved the 3 wise men sketch, but my favourite was Noah’s Ark, this involved audience participation and had me nearly crying with laughter.
Although this was a well put together comedy and was clearly appreciated by the other people in the audience I feel that to totally appreciate it you need a very extensive knowledge of the bible and need to be good with names as there are lots of them thrown at you very quickly so you have to be on your toes to keep up with their quick witted references.
