The Alice House – A Great Find!

I recently dined at The Alice House on Salusbury Road, London (about a 1 minute walk from Queen’s Park tube station on the Bakerloo line).

Upon arrival, it was evident that this had a great ambience about it. The restaurant has a real lounge like feel is warm and friendly.

You instantly feel at ease with the dark wood interior, numerous comfy couches, fireplace and large windows everywhere! I also spotted a huge table football and loads of board games, which were free to use (great for entertaining kids!) It was quite busy when I went on a Wednesday evening and the patrons seemed relaxed and happy!

We were greeted by a friendly member of staff within a few minutes of entering and seated right away.

We started off with the cocktails. If you like Gin than this is the place for you! The restaurant has a mixologist who specializes in gin and it shows! The cocktails were delicious! If you are not a gin fan there are plenty of other cocktails and an extensive drinks menu! I initially thought that the cocktails were a bit on the small side, but they were very strong, which I enjoyed!

The menu itself was not very extensive but there was a good selection and I still had problems deciding what to order.

My trusty server asked us what we like and made some recommendations, which were spot on! It is interesting to note that the options all seemed very ‘clean’ fresh and healthy as opposed to the fried food you often encounter in gastro pubs.

We decided on a starter of warm roasted squash and spelt salad with walnuts. This came while we were still enjoying our cocktails and was beautifully presented! It could not have tasted more fresh and delicious if I had prepared it myself! It came with a healthy amount of pumpkin seeds and pita bread as well. I really appreciated the healthy little touches that are incorporated thought the menu.

Next to our mains. The portion sizes again were very generous.

I decided to try the flank steak. I am normally quite particular about how I like my steak cooked, but this was done to perfection with a lovely sauce which was delicious and a not too overpowering. I found the portion sizes to be much larger to what I am accustomed to, without sacrificing on taste.

The chips were also lovely with little pots of ketchup that came with it.

The manager told me that their meat is purchased from the local butcher and all produce sourced from Borough Market! Even their beers are sourced from within 10 miles. Local sourcing of ingredients is a priority here, which is really apparent when consuming their food!

I tried my companion’s dish, which was the whole black bream fish with fennel and roasted (not fried!) potatoes! The fish was grilled and tasty!

Despite being very full we could not resist trying the desert! I had the apple fritters with cinnamon and salted caramel, which came in a jug! They certainly did not scrimp on the caramel to my delight! It tasted homemade and I only wish I could have finished it because it was so yummy!

Overall, the food was very good – very fresh, locally sourced and prepared well. I thought that the dishes were priced well for London, especially considering the big portion sizes!

Little touches in the presentation of the meal really made a difference, such as the cucumber infused water and a jug of caramel for the pudding and the service really made you feel like your custom was valued, with an attentive staff.

I rate the Alice House a strong 4 out of 5 and am looking forward to returning in the near future.
