It was my pleasure to see Chicago the Musical last night at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury. I had never been to Aylesbury before but found the theatre easily and there were ample spaces in the car park. There was a small parking fee to pay. The theatre was very impressive looking from the outside and the inside did not disappoint. I loved the ambience in this theatre.

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The toilets were clean. It was however a little warm in the auditorium. Outside of London I think this is the nicest theatre that I have had the pleasure of going to.

Chicago is set in the 1920’s and is based on real life events telling the story of Roxie Hart (Hayley Tamaddon). Showgirl Roxie has killed her lover after he threatens to leave her. Her husband Amos Hart (Neil Ditt) is loving husband who vows to stand by her side until he finds out about her affair. He promptly gives her up to the authorities, leaving her to face the death penalty for murder. Hayley Tamaddon gives a strong performance throughout; I was not expecting the comical side of Roxie to be delivered with such ease, but found it very entertaining.

In prison we meet Velma Kelly (Sophie Carmen Jones) another murderess who along with “The Girls” all have their story to tell as to why they ended up in prison. ‘Cell Block Tango’ the girl’s prison scene was one of my favourites of the show, beautifully choreographed, a sultry performance given by all. They are all looked after by Mama (Gina Murray) who had one of the strongest voices of the night, I loved her performance.

Velma is represented by Billy Flynn (John Partridge) who is the slick, smooth talking lawyer, corrupt and driven by money, twisting the truth completely, only interested in who can make him the top dollar. I have to mention ‘All I Care About’ a captivating performance by Billy and the girls, I just adored the feathers!

The story continues as Billy flits between the girls, both of them battling to stay off death row, Billy ‘the showman’ performing for the press, manipulating them for his own gain. I loved Mary Sunshine (A D Richardson) a strong and witty performance.

I had a great time watching this show, no great elaborate set, but a cast of beautifully bodied actors and actresses, singing and performing some outstanding numbers including; ‘All That Jazz’ ‘When Your Good To Mama’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’. There was great interaction between Musical Director Ben Atkinson the cast and indeed the audience. The orchestra were on view on stage throughout and delivered in a very entertaining way.

I would recommend Chicago and look forward to going to visit the Waterside Theatre again.
