The Bodyguard at the Cliffs Pavilion Southend Review

22 January to 2 February 2019

Wow, wow, wow, what a show! The award-winning smash-hit musical which is based on the blockbuster film by Lawrence Kasdan, which starred Kevin Costner and the legendary Whitney Houston is not to be missed. The Bodyguard the Musical is directed by Thea Sharrock.

Bodyguard, former secret service agent Frank Farmer (Benoit Marechal), is employed to improve security and protect superstar Rachel Marron, played by three-time Brit nominee and X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke, who was superb in her role. The atmosphere and anticipation of Rachel’s stalker (Phil Atkinson) portrayed a very dark and scary character. The Bodyguard rolls out hit after hit from Whitney Houston which included: Queen of the night, One moment in time, I have nothing, So emotional, Saving all my love, to name but a few and one of the biggest hits of all time – I will always love you.

Alexandra Burke’s vocals were perfect and were suitable for this role. You would have thought the musical was written just for her.

Alexandra Burke performed a duet with Micha Richardson, who played Rachel’s sister Nicki Marron was truly mesmerising and their harmonies were beautiful.

The performance was captivating from the opening scene until the very end. The set was simple but to the point and the scene changes were seamless.

Alexandra Burke’s costumes were stunning and hats off to Karen Bruce the choreographer who injected fresh moves to this production.

I would rate this performance a well-deserved 5 out of 5. You will not be left disappointed.

I do need to add, to save disappointment, that if you are going to watch an afternoon performance then you will not see Alexandra Burke perform as she is only on stage for evening performances only.

All the staff at the Cliffs Pavilion was helpful and polite. We were guided to our row with ease and a smile and served out drinks swiftly and politely, Very impressed.

Rating: 5/5
