Reading Eggs Review
Reading Eggs

I was asked to review an online program called Reading Eggs which teaches children aged 3-13 how to read by using interactive games, songs and phonics to motivate and encourage them to learn.
I have a 3½ year old son and 2 year old daughter who both really enjoyed the 5 week trial.
There are actually three different programs you can use on the site:
Reading Eggs – which is for children who cannot read yet or just starting out
Reading Eggspress – for readers who are able to read by themselves
Mathseeds – a fun way of learning maths
We used the Reading Eggs program which is specially for early readers and those with no reading skills at all.
You work your way with your child around a progress map which has games and cartoon graphics which encourage your child to listen and then copy out loud what the character says. It also encourages your child to click on the letter to familiarise them with that specific letter and it then progresses to building up words.
The concept and idea is excellent and the graphics really held my children’s attention. Even my 2 year old was repeating the letter sounds and taking part in trying to identify the correct letters in the games.
My 3½ year old son’s speech is slightly delayed and I found Readings Eggs to be helpful in encouraging him to make different sounds and attempt more words. I was really surprised at how quickly he was able to identify the letters and especially when they were in a word form and I could really see both my children’s reading skills developing.
As a parent who is relatively new to phonics, I found it to be useful in teaching me the correct pronunciation of letters using phonics.
I really like the whole concept and the fact that the characters are fun and colourful and not robotic as some online programs can be.
Another great asset is they have lots of free activity sheets which you can print out to give to your child. They have little games where your child has to identity the right object with the right letter. They can also trace around the letter to encourage them to write.
The only objective I found was the Homepage was a bit confusing and logging in the first time took a bit of navigating, however once I logged in I found it to be easier to find what I was looking for.
An online subscription costs £39.95 for a year, and I do feels its good value for money primarily as I noticed my children did benefit from the trial and are now able to identity more letters and can pronounce them correctly.
I would definitely recommend Reading Eggs to all parents and I will be renewing my subscription after the summer holidays.
Rating: 4.5/5
