This evening (Monday 5 June 2017) I had the pleasure of watching the stage performance of The Buddy Holly Story at Theatre Royal in Brighton.
This tells the story of the three years in which Buddy Holly became the world’s top recording artist; showcasing many of his greatest and memorable hits. Right from the start of the show you were transported to the musical era of the late 1950’s, where rock ‘n’ roll was struggling to be heard mainstream. The enthusiasm of the entire cast was infectious and the audience happily participated, singing and clapping along to the livelier hits. Quieter ballads and poignant love songs were exquisitely sung, to a hushed audience.
Buddy Holly’s interaction between his various band members was very well depicted, as was his dealings with radio stations and managers. Comedic value was very often in the background; with asides between his band well-constructed. A particularly memorable scene was during Buddy Holly’s performance in Harlem – where it was not known that the band were white, playing to a black audience. The two comperes introducing this section successfully portrayed the ambience of a potentially hostile audience to great effect. The singers, actors and musicians performed to a very high standard, their obvious enjoyment in their performance radiating out towards the audience.
The Theatre Royal is easy to find, in the heart of the city of Brighton itself, with ample parking nearby in various car parks. The theatre staff were all very welcoming and professional.
All in all, The Buddy Holly Story is an excellent show; thoroughly recommended, with a 5-star rating.
