Having been stuck at home for the last few months due to the Coronavirus and home schooling I have been very keen to get my sons (aged 9 and 5) outside as much as possible and away from their screens, to which they seem to have become surgically attached! Usually this has involved walking, playing football or running around in the local park. The latter two always seeming to end up with my youngest son getting hurt somehow.

When I was asked to review Tig-Tag I jumped at the chance, even though I wasn’t even sure what a Tig-Tag was. We love to try out any new toys and my boys were very excited when the package arrived and couldn’t wait to try it out. The Tig-Tag also came with a lovely note from Sue, who came up with the idea for Tig-Tag along with her sister, Louise. I immediately liked that they share my passion for trying to get children active and most importantly away from screens.

So, it turns out that the Tig-Tag is a new way of playing “It” or as other people may call it “Tag” or even “Tig”, in fact we have played quite a bit of “It” over the last few months and as mentioned above it usually ends up in arguments or injury to one of the boys. Tig-Tag is a new way to play “It” and we couldn’t wait to try it out. The Tig-Tag itself is a super soft toy (a bit like a mini-cushion I thought) which is thrown by the catcher at the other players, and the first person it hits then becomes “it” and gets to throw the Tig-Tag to catch another player and so it continues. Because the Tig-Tag is so soft it doesn’t hurt at all when it hits someone and can even be used to play inside. (I have discovered it is also a very handy tool for getting my sons’ attention when they are ignoring me and engrossed in their screens, a quick throw of the Tig-Tag and they soon look up!!)

We really loved playing Tig-Tag and have played quite a few times over the last week. There have been noticeably less arguments than previously and nobody has been hurt whilst playing which is amazing. It is such a simple concept but such a great idea.

The design of the Tig-Tag is also really good. The shape makes it very easy to hold and to throw. It is very lightweight so will be easy to take with us when we go out and about during the summer holidays, and doesn’t take up much room in a bag. The colours (blue and red) are very bright and bold and it seems really well made. It is made of neoprene and filled with polystyrene and feels like it will be very durable. An added bonus is that it is washable too, and this is a definite positive as I can imagine it may get a bit grubby after being used for a while.

I also liked the way the Tig-Tag was presented in very bright and colourful cardboard packaging which immediately enticed me in. The slogan for Tig-Tag appears to be “It’s time to run… and have some fun… let’s play Tig-Tag” and that’s exactly what it is, lots of fun for all the family.

Overall, we all love Tig-Tag and I can see we are going to spend lots of time having fun playing with it during the Summer holidays.
