My friend and I recently dined at Sutton and Sons Fish & Chips restaurant on Essex Road, Islington, London (closest tube is Highbury and Islington.) It is about a 10 minute walk from the tube station and very easy to find.
Upon arrival, it was evident that this was no average fish & chip shop but something far more diverse!
We were greeted right away by a very friendly member of staff and offered a choice of seating areas. The interior was very cool and immaculate, with a nice ambiance, although they do a takeaway service as well.
We were seated shown a variety of menus. The server took her time in explaining what the specials were and how they were prepared. She also offered up several recommendations and answered our numerous questions about the preparation and alternatives for food intolerances with a smile!
The menu itself was very diverse and had an excellent choice. There was proper seafood and a wide variety of it including Maldon Oysters, Mussels, and lobster in addition to the traditional fish and chips.
Spoilt for choice we decided to order the Maldon oysters as our starters. Our starter came within a few minutes and were beautifully presented.
The oysters were divine – very large and tasted so fresh! We appreciated the excellent presentation, freshness and the fact and came with half a lemon and a big bottle of Tabasco sauce. My dining companion and I were in oyster heaven!
Next we ordered the mains and decided to try the Seabass, grilled in garlic butter and I also one of the house specials. In addition we ordered a traditional fish and chips meal (cod with mushy peas and chips).
The meals arrived quickly and were well presented. The seabass in particular was cooked to perfection, fresh and the garlic and butter sauce was delicious and a not too overpowering. I found the portion sizes to be much larger to what I am accustomed to, without sacrificing on taste. The chips were also lovely with a variety of condiments to accompany them.
I tried my companion’s dish, which was traditional fish and chips and was pleasantly surprised that despite being very crispy, without being greasy and still tasted very good!
I have since learnt that their fish is responsibly sourced and delivered daily from their fishmongers, which is really apparent when tasting their food!
Despite being very full we ordered the Sticky Toffee pudding with walnuts. It tasted homemade and I only wish I could have finished it because it was so yummy!
Overall, the food was exceptional-very fresh, well prepared with great diversity. I thought that it was very well priced for London, especially considering the portion sizes. The service was warm, friendly and the staff really understand the dishes on the menu. I rate Sutton and sons a strong 4.5/5 and am looking forward to returning in the near future.
