Soul II Soul were one of those soul bands in the 80’s who I loved and who turned my attention away from my real love, rock music. The amazing voices of Caren Wheeler and Jazzie B and their hypnotic beat of the music with the hits – ‘Keep on movin’ and ‘Who’s that man?’ had me playing their music night after night.
Coming to see the band celebrate their 30 years in the business was a real treat for me. It was amazing that the two original leads Caron and Jazzie B were here tonight to celebrate this awesome milestone. Although the band only got onstage at 9.30pm (making the audience restless) as soon as they were on – with their ‘Funky Dred’ Logo backdrop – they were ‘on fire’.
The band: 3 backing singers with amazing voices, 2 violinists, 2 drummers, 2 keyboard players and 2 guitarists and singer Charlotte Kelly had a fantastic sound.
The hits came one after another ‘Missing you’’, I care’, ‘Lovin’ is like my baby’, ‘I can see right through you’, ‘Holdin’ on’, ‘Sunshine,’ ‘Get a life’, ‘Wish’ and ‘Who’s that man?’ – with the phenomenal lead of Jazzie B (the sexiest voice in the world!) and the spectacular lighting and visuals to accompany such raw, ‘in your face’ talent. A brilliant performance from the Grammy Award winners – the hall was ‘buzzing’ from the energy their performance, passion and intense ability to ‘join us all as one’.
The support band, The Winachi Tribe, were a talented and apt support band for the evening, they had a funky melodic sound and were joined on stage by the singer Rowetta – a great starting block for Soul II Soul. The main band were superb and if, like me, you loved the old Soul II Soul from 30 years ago – you will not be disappointed. Their talent is as sharp, powerful and enigmatic as it has always been. A sheer joy to listen, to dance to and watch – fantastic!
Superb performance, full of life and SOUL!
