With the opportunity to relive my youth I looked forward to taking my 3 year old son to see Sooty, Sweep and Sue, although when I was younger (showing my age!) it was with Matthew Corbett, now though Sooty and Friends are ably assisted by Richard Cadell.
Buxton Opera House remains a great place to go, right in the centre of Buxton, when you enter you go straight back about 50 years with the wooden box office and steep stairs straight up to the upper and dress circles, fortunately its quite steep in the dress circle as all of the booster seats for younger children had gone, but nothing that alternating between a pile of coats and sat on my knee couldn’t fix.
The stage was all very simply set with a little podium all set ready for Sooty and his friends. The first half of the show consisted of Sooty playing hide and seek, saying hello to all the girls and boys and even doing some magic tricks of his own along with Sweep. I was surprised to see a number of people even without children, truly reliving their youth, but there were jokes for the children and adults alike.
Sooty then introduced his first friend, a large white rabbit (Dion Van Rijt) with his magic and dance routine. Although a well-choreographed routine a couple of minor issues, including the rabbit literally being out of the hat, made it all the more entertaining for the adults whilst not ruining it for the children.
Sooty’s next friend was a very brightly dressed juggling entertainer who mixed a bit of slapstick with yo-yo-ing, hat balancing and egg and apple juggling as well as a bit of audience participation.
Unfortunately, due to my son being poorly we missed the second half of the show but I would definitely say that it was a good opportunity to see Sooty, Sweep and Sue for adults and children alike. I would give it 3 out of 5 on the first half performance.
