Some Guys Have All The Luck: The Rod Stewart Story pays tribute to the life of Rod Stewart a pop icon whose career has spanned over 5 decades and has sold over 100 million records worldwide.

I was not quite sure what to expect from this show, which I saw at the New Wimbledon Theatre. I initially thought it was a musical based on Rod Stewart songs, but I was mistaken and in for a treat!

The first half of the production takes you thru the story of Rod Stewart’s life, from his humble beginnings to his rise to stardom. Rod Stewart songs, are incorporated into the story, along with many photographs and newspaper clippings, which I found very engaging.

The photographs in particular were brilliant and captured his essence. You could really see a star in the making! There were many interesting facts about his life that were revealed such he had no interest in music at school and was good friends with Ronny Wood before any of them were famous.

The songs, performed by the brilliant Paul Metcalfe, who with his distinctive raspy voice sounds just like Rod Stewart! The resemblance and the mannerisms to Rod Stewart including the dress sense were uncanny! Some favourites that were performed brilliantly in the first half included ‘Handbags and Gladrags’, ‘In a Broken Dream’, ‘Stay with me ‘and my favourite ‘Some Guys have all the Luck.‘

The second half of the show felt like I was at Rod Stewart concert!

Paul Metcalfe was phenomenal with his performance! His energy was infectious as he performed Stewarts more recent hits including ‘Do You Think I’m Sexy’, ‘Maggie May.’ ‘First Cut is the Deepest’ and ‘Reason to Believe.’ I was delighted to hear all of my favourite songs, and including some that I had no idea were Rod Stewart’s!

Everyone in the audience was up dancing in the aisles and singing along! It was very lively – so much so that a number of people ran up on stage and had to be escorted off by security!

You do not have to be a Rod Stewart fan to enjoy ‘Some Guys Have All the Luck’ but if you enjoy his songs, then you need to buy a ticket right away!

While I would not have classified myself as a big Rod Stewart fan, I found that after leaving this production I left as one.

I give this production a 4/5. The New Wimbledon theatre is beautiful, with plenty to do in close proximity to the theatre.

Rating: 4/5
