Understandably my children really struggle to have sun in their eyes when in the car and I am also very aware of wanting to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays even through glass. As for any parent, suitable window sunshades are therefore a must in both summer and winter. I have had several types in the past, tending to use removable ones initially however these were no longer usable once my son worked out how to pull them off! They also had the disadvantage of preventing you from opening the windows. This is where Shady comes in since they have designed car window sunshades which allow you to open your windows even when on.

I was sent their pack of two car window sunshades to trial and have to admit I am impressed. They arrived in a simple cardboard envelope along with an information sheet, 2x window wipes and a plastic smoother. No excess packaging in sight and all looked very self explanatory. The simple information sheet is supported by an online video, easily accessed via a QR code. This short clip shows you how to perform the exact steps written on the sheet so no mistakes are made when trying to put them on. It was very straightforward to follow and everything required (except for something to dry the window but any cloth or muslin will do) was provided making it so easy. Once I had watched the video I set about following the instructions, with the key first step being ensuring my window wasn’t too cold (either via checking the outside temperature or applying after the car has been driven for a little while). I am not quite how this is necessary for application but is a simple step to follow to ensure the product is easily applied. All further steps were just as simple, from peeling the back off the screen itself to applying the self-adhesive sunshade itself carefully onto the window. You are supplied with a plastic smoothing device to ensure no air bubbles are present. I used this as instructed but to be honest didn’t find that applying the screen lead to many (or any!) air bubbles actually developing as I went. The whole process from unpacking the product, watching and the video and applying both sunshades took about 10 minutes.

As hoped, there was no problem in winding down either of my windows with the sunshades on. The sunshades are designed to 86% of harmful UV rays. It is difficult to know how this compares to other sunshades as many do not publish as exact percentage. The fact that they are stuck on also means they cannot be pulled off by little hands. I am however unsure how long they will stay stuck on or what happens when you want to remove them (how easy this is and whether any residue will be left on your window).

My personal additional favourite feature of the Shady sunshades is the pattern on them. The addition of white images of a moon, stars and clouds is designed to give your child something else to look at (high contrast colours are known to be great for even very young babies) and aid cognitive development. At first I wasn’t sure of the design being on both of my car windows however it is very cleverly designed to be completely black on the outside of the car so you can’t see it (to the level I couldn’t even take a photo to show as you can just see your reflection in the blackened window).

The product is a bit more expensive than many other sunshades but I think worth it for the key features. I think these would be a great practical gift for any parent!
