We’re just switching off from all things school related for the summer holidays in my house, but I also had in my mind that I need to get some new bags and equipment for my rabble before they go back to school at the start of September.

This particular item is a personalised ‘record bag’ style bag with a customisable name on the front in graffiti style writing. I decided to get this for my son, ***** (editor’s note – name removed). However, it is customisable with up to 20 characters, so would fit most names on.

It arrived in a plastic bag, inside a jiffy bag. It was easy to see the product through the clear plastic and to get it opened up.

The bag itself is mainly black, with the logo on the front flap of the bag. When you open the bag you can see that it is held together by velcro (if being slightly fussy about this, the velcro strips on the back of the outer flap are stitched on vertically whereas the ones inside the bag that they attach to are horizontal, although this may be a deliberate design).

The main section of the bag is inside a zip opening. This section easily fits A4 in with a little extra space. It also has another zip opening pocket inside, which would be great for keeping keys or valuables in. There are also two small open pockets to keep smaller items in. In front of the main pocket is another zip opening pocket, which is slightly smaller than A5. There are then 2 more smaller pockets, for which the zips go round from the middle of the side of the pocket, across the top and down to the middle of the other side of the pocket (you can see it in the photograph, which is probably better the my description!). These ones easily fit pencil cases, calculators etc. in.

The personalised front flap is detachable via a long strip of velcro. This would be great if you wanted to change the design while keeping the contents of the bag. However, I’m not sure how practical this would be for school use if friends came to realise it could be pulled off!! If it’s not on then the bag looks a little odd.

The shoulder strap is adjustable, stitched to the bag on one side and through a link on the other side. It seems well built. I’d have liked to have seen an extra pad on the shoulder strap to help spread the weight when sitting on the shoulder and to stop it cutting in so much.

The size of the bag is very practical for school, with the main section being plenty big enough for A4 school books and loose papers. The bag dimensions are approximately 38x30x12.5 centimetres. The addition of separate pockets for pencil cases and other extra bits is also handy. However, there’s no outside pockets to the bag, so nowhere to slot a water bottle in to for school or days out. In terms of size, the bag is also a perfect size for carry on luggage for aeroplanes so could be well suited for that as well as school.

It’s a very reasonable price at £16.99 in comparison to other school bags. The things that let it down slightly are the removable velcro flap and the lack of water bottle storage. It looks great though and my son loved the design. If you like personalised bags then the Ryman website has a few other options too (click on the link to this one below and you can check out the others from there). They also have loads of other back to school items.
