Room on the Broom Live at the Royal & Derngate Northampton Review

Reviewed by Ilze Lee

We watched Room on the Broom Live, by Tall Stories, at Northamptonshire’s Royal & Derngate theatre yesterday. I’ll admit, I was a tad apprehensive as to whether the play would do justice to one of our favourite books of all time!

This book from Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler is, of course, one of those that just had to come out every night for bed time reading for a good couple of years, so living up to that is quite a tall order.

We were not disappointed at all.

The story kicks off with four friends camping. Everyone knows that no camping trip is complete without a few strange sounds or sights, so we are quickly led into the world of the wonderfully friendly witch with too big a heart and too small of a broomstick.

Along came the obligatory witches’ cat… and a delightful one at that! This is played with just enough sass, wisdom and the right amount of being stand offish to create a pawsome character!

The dog’s singing and dancing quickly earns the adoration of the audience as well as the witch, earning himself a place on the broom. Then follows the bird and the frog, and the witch’s broom can’t quite cope with all that!

For those parents whose children are a little more sensitive to scary characters… rest assured that the dragon is nothing to worry about.

The cast consisting of Amy Harris (Witch), Emma Crowley-Bennett (Cat,) Charlie Guest (Frog and Dog) and Andrew Mudie (Bird and Dragon) has a wonderful energy about them. The audience clearly enjoyed this show, with many giggles from the adults as well as children of all ages. That’s no mean feat!

Tall Stories provides a wonderful experience. I would recommend this especially if it is your child’s first time at the theatre. With a running time of 55 minutes, a good amount of audience interaction and great sing-along, it is a perfect start to offer to a new generation of theatre lovers.

The theatre itself has a lovely and friendly atmosphere, with staff members all being very polite and eager to help.
