The rock musical, Rock of Ages, is currently at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow so we were delighted to get the chance to go along and see the show.
Rock of Ages is a loud, in-your-face, riotous joy of a musical. Set in late 1980s Los Angeles to a huge soundtrack of rock hits, it grabs you from the first moments and doesn’t let go.
The classic rock music was cleverly woven into the story, giving each song a new meaning, no mean feat for such well-loved numbers as “We Built This City”, “I Can’t Fight This Feeling”, “Final Countdown” and of course, “Don’t Stop Believing.”
The production looked wonderful down to the last detail, a massive credit to the hair, makeup and costume team behind it.
The cast were excellent with a standout performance from Noel Sullivan, who is more than talented enough to break away from his Hear’Say baggage.
The live band on stage throughout did a terrific job and really made the show feel like a rock concert disguised as a musical. It’s this element that gives the show such a wide appeal, you don’t have to have a musical theatre buff to have a great time here.
It’s also an extremely funny show, with a wonderful script that never drags.
A must-see show, far superior on stage to the recent film version, one not to be missed.
Tickets cost from £12.90 to £50.90 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
