Roblox Star Commandos Figures Review

Over the last two decades the way we play and view video games has changed a lot, with the dawn of online video games and Wi-Fi enabled multiplayer allowing numerous people from all over the world to play together, share creations and download content. The success of this is in no small part thanks to a game released in 2006 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel called Roblox.

If you own a computer or console you’ve probably heard of Roblox, it’s everywhere and every month over one million active users log in to play but in case you don’t know, let me give you a quick summary.

Roblox is a massive online multiplayer and game creation platform that allows users to design and play their own games or those designed by others. These games can range from racing simulators and role playing to obstacle courses, simulations and tycoon games, in which players build factories based around a particular theme such as superheroes to unlock new weapons and abilities.

Due to Roblox hosting user created games in a vast variety of genres it allows the platform to remain incredibly topical and up to date with current affairs as well as bringing cult and fan favourites such as horror movie characters and comic book superheroes to life in a variety of genres.

In January 2017, toy developer Jazwares teamed up with the Roblox corporation to produce a line of toy mini figures based on user created content made by the largest and most popular developers of the Roblox universe. These include box sets of multiple figures and accessories from several different genres and sub genres but also accessories and blind boxes that contain a random mini figure and in some cases limited/special edition mini figures as well.

On a personal note, my son is a huge fan of Roblox and loves the variety and creation elements the platform offers. Every time we watch him play it, there seems to be something new and different. So I was thrilled when we were given the opportunity to review one of the mini figure sets from Jazwares, the Roblox Star Commandos pack.

The pack includes:

• 4 Roblox mini figures (based on “galactic Robloxian troops”)
• Multiple accessories (including interchangeable helmets, faces, hair and helmets as well as space age laser guns)
• A collector’s checklist (so you can keep track of any Roblox figures you might collect and build your collection)
• An exclusive virtual item code (which unlocks a single item for use whilst playing the Roblox game)

The product description on the box reads “A rift in the space-time continuum has jumbled up these galactic Robloxian troops with other heroes and villains from alternate realities. Now, it is up to you to rebuild them – one part at a time. Mix and match your favourite accessories, gear, and outfits from this set and your entire Roblox collection to customize your ultimate squadron!”.

My first impression of the figures when taking them out of the box was the similarities to LEGO mini figures in terms of the way the limbs move and the ‘mix & match’ quality of the interchangeable parts allows you to make several different variations of the original characters.

The figures are well made and a good representation of the Roblox skins you see when playing the game on consoles or PC’s. There is of course the potential that, if mishandled, the limbs of the figures can become disconnected but during general play with my son the figures seemed sturdy and well produced.

As I’ve already mentioned my son is a huge fan of Roblox and was thrilled to get his first Roblox character pack to play with. He really enjoyed mixing up the figures and accessories to make the most random and crazy variations that he could and we had a lot of fun role playing our own little Roblox universe. Another great feature is the figures and accessories can be intermingled with other Roblox mini figures to create an even more expansive Roblox collection with unlimited freedom of choice and creativity.

We will definitely be expanding his Roblox mini figure collection over the months leading up to Christmas, as for the price, quality and creative variance they offer, they’re just fantastic! They would make excellent stocking fillers leading into the season and are a wonderful idea as a gift for hardcore Robloxians. Casual gamers or even people who aren’t even fans of the game but enjoy action figures and creative play.

My final grade for the Roblox Star Commandos mini figure set is 5 out of 5 stars, although I do want to extend this to the other sets as, if they are as well produced as the Star Commandos set, they will only add to the overall playability and expansiveness of the Roblox Universe outside of the video game. Also, as we are fast approaching the holiday season, they make an excellent option for parents of children who like to play Roblox as a means to draw them away from TV time and get their creative juices flowing. Effectively these are LEGO figures for the “Roblox generation” but that only makes them more appealing as fans of the games will relate to and get excited by the characters and collectors will really get a thrill out of how well made and presented the figure packs are. They’re fun to play with and great to look at!
