Jacqueline Wilson is a well-known author in our house as the 2 older children are very keen fans. The older of the 2 has read near enough every book she has written! Queenie is the latest book to be read here and there is a competition as to who will finish it first.

Queenie is set in 1953 the year of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and tell the story of Elsie Kettle and her Nan who want to go to London to see it in person but tragedy strikes when they both get diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Elsie is then sent to the children’s ward of Miltree hospital where she meets the hospital cat Queenie. Elsie finds it difficult to adapt to the strict rules of the hospital especially when they are enforced by nasty nurse Patterson. She also does not like the boy in the next bed.

The book is from an innocent by gone era beautifully written and highly recommended.
