If you are looking for a fantastic gift for an adult or older child that likes pottery or painting, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of choice for a medium sized budget.  I could find basic painting pottery sets or paint by numbers, but I was looking for something a little more premium without breaking the bank.

That’s why I was so pleased to be able to receive one of the Pott’d range of craft sets, to review, they are above basic prices at £29.00 upwards, so what extra do you get for your money over and above a £15 set from a high street store?
I was sent a Pott’d Paintables Paint a Mug set and the first thing I noticed was that it includes two mugs, not one, which is great as I hate an odd mug in the cupboard & I am sure others do too.  The branding looks a step up too, coming in a matt cardboard box decorated in pastels.  On the rear of the box, it illustrates the contents of the kit, even down to showing the colour of the paints inside.

On opening the box, you can see that contents are packaged well, 2 two mugs, 12 different paint colours, 4 paint brushes of varying sizes and an instructions leaflet are contained in a sturdy cardboard structure.  The mugs are definitely different from the basic white mugs often found in these sets.  In a creamy coloured glazed pottery with a dimpled effect they look like the more expensive brands found in the shops.  The enclosed leaflet is double sided and folds out to show two pages of clear, simple instructions, two pages of design ideas and a photo page showing designs people have done in the past.  There is also an email address where you can send a photo of your completed mug to get into the Paintable Masterpieces Hall of Fame.

Finishing your mug is really simple to do, when you have come up with your design, paint it on with the paint & brushes provided and leave to dry for around 30 minutes.  When dry you need to pop your mug into an unheated oven at 150 degrees for 30 minutes, allowing the oven to slowly warm to temperature.  After 30 minutes, turn the oven off and leave to cool completely. You are now ready to handwash and grab a cuppa from your new mug!

A few points to note; the mug isn’t suitable for use in the dishwasher or microwave, or leaving in direct sunlight due to the fragile nature of the mug and paint colours.  It also says on page 3 of the instructions only, under warnings, and not on the box, that the kit isn’t suitable for children, I assume that is because of the baking element, but it should be made much clearer and shown plainly on the box.

Aside from the above, this is a premium looking craft kit, that ends up with two useful and high-end looking pottery mugs.  If you don’t like the sound of a mug, Pott’d also have several other different craft kits on their website www.getpottd.com, which all come with free UK 2-3 day delivery if ordered before 2pm.
The perfect high quality Christmas gift for those who love crafting.
