One For All Smart Control 5 Universal Remote Review

Reviewed by David Savage

Like every household these days I have a variety of remote controls for the television, Sky box, DVD player etc. and they are forever being put down in different places and never together. So, when asked to review the One For All Smart Control 5 (URC 7955) universal remote that controls up to 5 devices, I of course said yes.

The Smart Control 5 universal remote works with televisions, HDTV, LCD, Plasma, Projectors, Satellite and cable boxes, media centres, Blu-ray and DVD players, games consoles (if have IR function), audio equipment, amplifiers, active speaker systems and has a NetTV function that allows you to bring up online video streaming videos such as Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer.

The remote looks sleek and uncomplicated and was extremely easy to setup. It requires 4x AAA batteries (not supplied). There are two ways to setup the remote for your devices; SimpleSet for the most popular brands and entering a code that can be found in the codelist book (supplied).

I was going to use the remote with 3 devices; television; Sky HD box and DVD player. Setting up the remote to work with all three devices only took 2 or 3 minutes and was very, very simple. For the television I had to manually enter a code as my make wasn’t listed on the SimpleSet quick codes, but this was just a matter of finding my brand in the Codelist book and inputting it (hold down the MAGIC button until the device name blinks twice, select device required, enter the 4 digit code and they try to power off the device). If the code is successful the device will turn off. The Skybox I used the SimpleSet instructions, which is basically the same except you only have to enter a 1 digit number rather than 4. The DVD player I again had to manually enter a code. All 3 devices are now successfully working from the 1 remote.

The Smart Control also has some other cool functions such as;

Smart activities – which allows you to control 3 devices (tv, set top box and soundbar for example) as if they were one – so change tv channels and adjust the volume etc. without having to change devices on the remote!

NetTV – if you have a smart television then this allows you to access your online streaming services, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer etc.

You also still have the standard remote functions of mute, menu, volume, power so will still have the functionality of your old remotes.

Overall, I am very impressed with this remote. It looks good and is very comfortable to hold and operate. If is very easy to setup – you can even download an app onto your phone if you want to set up your devices that way. One For All have made it very simple to configure all your devices on to one handy remote. One For All say that it is 100% compatible and works with more than 7000 brands. I have only used on 3 so far and each without a hitch and only 1 of those was what One For All consider the most popular brands that has been setup on SimpleSet.

The hardest part of this remote was getting into the packaging.

If you have a variety of remotes then I can recommend a universal remote from One For All!
