Nativity! The Musical at the New Theatre Oxford Review

11-15 December 2018

Nativity! The Musical did way more than just ‘Sparkle & Shine’ when it opened to a full theatre last night, it was electric. Currently playing at the New Theatre in Oxford from 11-15 December this is a MUST SEE yuletide production packed with hilarious moments, the cutest dog and a whole heap of catchy songs.

Based on the 2009 movie, Nativity, this stage version is like an improved more up to date offering. In our house we watch this movie a lot – we’ve probably watched a good 5 or 6 times before December arrives so it’s always a worry to go and see an adaptation of something you love. Thankfully you need not worry about this, this show is everything you want it to be and more. There are updated touches here and there with the mention of Brexit, Theresa May’s dancing and Snapchat to name a few but the fundamental story and the characters are the ones we have grown to love.

I’ll admit I was worried Simon Lipkin wouldn’t ‘be’ Mr Poppy for me, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. He was funny and charming but also just the right amount of childish to pull off everyone’s favourite teaching assistant. His pairing with Scott Garnham managed to excellently convey the complex friendship that blossoms between Mr Maddens and his TA. I do hope that Scott’s eye was ok after a mid-performance accidental poke by Simon!

Huge hats off to all the children in this show, their performances were outstanding. They were consistently in sync and delivered lines and songs perfectly. Upon leaving the theatre my 6-year-old daughter made me instantly download the movie soundtrack to continue the fun all the way home…’Things are really coooool in Nazareth’, guess what we’re watching after school!

If you love Christmas, then you must take the family to see this show – you will be laughing throughout!
