It’s summertime again, and the sun has been shining a lot here in Manchester with some very hot days. But along with sun and heat can come sunburn and heatstroke which means kids and adults need to be protected, not just with suncream but with sun hats as well.
I was sent 2 My First Tilley sun hats, in red and blue (also available in denim, fuchsia, pink and purple), to put to the test with 5-year-old twins, and they love them! The weather has even been extremely good so we could put them to use.
The My First Tilley hats are made from 100% organic cotton duck, hand made in Canada, have an adjustable fit, float (buoyant with foam in the crown), are certified UPF 50+ for maximum protection and block 98% of harmful UVA/UVB radiation. The hats also feature grommets for extra ventilation and a secret pocket inside the hat (for which I’m sure kids will find all sorts of useful “treasures” to hide in it)! They are available in two sizes; S/M – for heads measuring between: 20 – 20 3/4” and L – for heads measuring between: 20 3/4” – 21 7/8”.
The boys love these hats. Not only do they look great but they are keeping them cool with the wide brim, they are lightweight (about 4oz) and are breathable. They are also water repellent so with the British summer will survive getting caught in a shower.
The hats are also machine washable on a delicate cycle or by hand. After washing you reshape by hand and leave to air dry. I tried a machine wash with one of the hats and it came out perfect. If after several washes the hat loses some of its water resistance then you will need to use a water repellent spray on it.
Overall, the My First Tilley hats are excellent and the boys like wearing them. They are of excellent quality (they survive they boys rough handling) and very well put together and seem very durable. They offer excellent sun protection and the wide brim helps keep the sun out of your eyes. They are great for the summer weather and would be great for taking on holiday.
While on the expensive side, the quality and protection factor make them worth the expense (as well as being handmade from organic cotton) and they look much better than a baseball cap!
