I recently received a box of Mummy Meagz Rocky Road bars to review (I know, life can be so hard at times).  I’m not a vegetarian or vegan, although I’d guess vegetarian meals now make up over 50% of my diet; therefore, I was intrigued to try some vegan confectionery.

The Rocky Road bars stemmed from Blondes Coffee Shop in Cottingham, East Yorkshire which was founded in 2003 by Meagan Boyle (Mummy Meagz) and her daughter Willow. Originally Blondes was a vegetarian cafe, but in 2016 they went entirely vegan. There’s a lovely potted history of the coffee shop on their website, which I won’t repeat here, but I’d highly recommend that you read it.

The ‘Meet The Team’ profiles are wonderfully presented, and perfectly sum up the ideology, spirit, kindness, and humour so obviously flowing throughout the company. And with huge apologies to the Mummy Meagz team, I suspect Bertie, the company mascot, might be the real driving force within the group.

The Rocky Road samples I received were Sea Salt, and Caramel flavoured although three other varieties are also available (Original, Orange, and Minty),

They contain biscuit pieces, cinder toffee, vegan mallows; and they’re coated in Belgian dark chocolate with salted caramel flavour and a touch of sea salt; what’s not to like? I did suspect the vegan mallows might be a little too sweet for me; however, I’m pleased to say I was utterly wrong.

They are simply delicious. The texture is wonderfully squidgy, with an indulgent mixture of sweet, salt, crunchy, and soft ingredients. The size, and weight of the bars at 55g, were just about right for me, any more might have been a little too much (but that’s not to say I wouldn’t have given it a sterling effort!)

The product has a very long shelf life. According to the packaging, they’re OK until 22nd Feb 2021, not that this is ever likely to be a factor with me, they’re unlikely to see next week let alone next year.

On a more serious note, a full list of ingredients together with allergen advice is available on the packaging.
They contain 1129 (kJ/kcal) per bar which is comparable to a lot of other sweet confectionery snack bars.

I would highly recommend these as an idea for a father’s day gift for anyone, not just those following a vegan or vegetarian diet. On a personal note, I’ve already made a few rather unsubtle hints within my household, that, very shortly, they would also make an ideal birthday gift.

The bars are readily available from most branches of Holland and Barrett. There’s also a useful, and easy to use, store locater on the Mummy Meagz website. I live between Bath, and Bristol, and was pleased to see that I had twelve stockists within 10 miles of my house. The site also lists numerous on-line suppliers.

I’m definitely going to try the other flavours available. However, for my personal taste, it will be hard to beat Sea Salt & Cinder Toffee.

I happily award these maximum stars.
