Mummy Loves Organics Breathe Body Candle Review

Reviewed by Kathryn Carr

A luxurious Christmas gift. Perfect for mums or mums-to-be, this clever, multi-use essential oil body candle creates a relaxing atmosphere and soothes both mind and body.”

This week I’ve been burning a candle from the ‘Mummy Loves Organics’ range of melting, essential oil body candles. I’ve always used candles as room scents and in winter, to create a cosy feel to my living room. I’d never heard of a candle that melts into an almost magical massage oil before, so was eager to put one to the test.

The ‘Breathe’ candle is made-up of eucalyptus, peppermint and cajuput (an essential oil that comes from a tree). These ingredients are said to aid breathing and help clear the mind; great if you’re feeling under the weather or a little overwhelmed. Interestingly, they’re also said to help ease morning sickness. With my baby six months old, I can’t vouch for this, but I would certainly have given it a try alongside the ginger biscuits! These factors together with the name ‘Mummy Loves’ and the simple yet elegant packaging make this range of candles a thoughtful Christmas present for mums-to-be.

As the candles are non-toxic and burn clean due to their 100% cotton wicks, it means they’re super safe to light in your home around children and pets (just keep them up high away from curious hands and paws). With candles to help with anxiety, stress, insomnia and balancing hormones, as well as properties in the essential oils to help heal stretch marks, this range is ideal for both ready-made mums and soon-to-be mums.

The scent of the ‘Breathe’ candle was subtle when I lit it in our open-plan living area, though it was certainly noticeable when I came back into the room, even hours after it had last been lit. Despite its powerful, sometimes penetrating properties, the scent was delicate and fresh. The candle gave off an almost natural vaporub style smell (albeit a much more pleasant one than that you’d find on a shelf at the chemist). Because of its organic nature, I was also happy to let it burn whilst I read in bed (I never dose off and I seconded this by ensuring my other half was around to be second in command to blowing said candle out). In a smaller room, the scent seemed stronger yet not overpowering. The ‘Breathe’ candle is perfect for the bunged up noses winter brings and the aroma did seem to help prepare me for sleep. With its gentle flicker and an estimated 40-hour burn time and the candle bearing up well, it seems I have plenty more relaxing evenings to come.

The body candles are hand-poured using organic shea butter, soy, wax and pregnancy safe essential oils. This two-in-one present or even gift to yourself, not only creates a peaceful atmosphere, the candle offers a luxurious hydrating experience for the body. I was a little unsure about applying the melted oil to my skin but the useful information card that accompanied the candle explained that the oil would only warm to approximately two degrees above body temperature, making it perfect to apply. And yes, it felt and smelt lovely. I decided to rub some on my chest to ease my congested nose. It did seem to help and was less invasive than the chemist bought alternative. If I’d still been pregnant with my achy, tired feet and legs I’d have certainly used this essential oil to ease them. I thought it may have been greasy, but it wasn’t, it rubbed in nicely, soaking in with a more moisturiser-like feel.

With the hectic festive season soon to take its toll, one of ‘Mummy Loves’ candles would make a perfect present in ensuring its recipient takes some ‘me time’ to put up their feet and spoil themselves. Priced at £35, the candle is perhaps a little more then I’d spend on myself, though I am very tempted to pay £29.95 for a Sleep Baby Diffuser which would be more practical than a candle in little one’s room which she is just about to move into. £35 however, is an amount I’d be willing to pay for a special gift designed with mummy’s and mummy’s-to-be in mind. There’s even exquisite gift sets for those who want to splash out. A ‘Mummy Loves’ candle would certainly light the way to a calm new year.
