This physical performance was in two parts – Nu.V.Na and Fight or Flight.

Nu.V.Na, or Nurture versus Nature. There were 6 performers and for this part, 3 were in black and 3 in white. I had assumed that this would mean that white would fight black and that one colour would represent nature, the other nurture but this was unclear. The Contemporary Dance was fluid and dancers were synchronised but due to the theme of violence, there were a lot of punching and kicking moves that were continuously repeated. I was also unsure where the focus was to be as at points everyone was doing their own dance.

Fight or Flight. I felt this was much better. Dance inspired by animals in the wild. Good clear story, lovely movements from the dancers which depicted the animals they were portraying. I did enjoy this part of the performance.

Definitely one for those specialising in dance and especially contemporary dance. As a person who does not know much about this type of dance, I found it difficult to connect.

Survival of the Fittest is on a Sweet Grassmarket within the Apex International Hotel until 11th August. Find them at www.monixarts.com, twitter @monixarts and on Facebook.
