I have just had the most beautiful, tender, juicy fillet steak at the Miller & Carter restaurant in Wheathampstead. I went there this lunchtime with my daughter and 11 year old granddaughter.

The Miller & Carter restaurant in Wheathampstead is housed in a beautiful Tudor building which is known locally as The Bull. It has its own car park. This restaurant is within easy reach of St Albans, Harpenden and Luton.

Parts of the restaurant and pub garden overlook water which had families of ducks swimming around in the sunshine.

We visited on the last day of October which was a beautiful sunny day, and the pub garden was full of families eating out of doors.

Although the restaurant was large it was very busy, even on a Friday lunchtime it was full. Most of the diners appeared to be couples or groups enjoying a lunchtime meal out, rather than families with children out on the last day of the half term holiday. This restaurant is certainly very, very popular!!

We were greeted by Alex and were quickly seated. There was an extensive wine list but we decided to have diet coke and water.

We all chose garlic bread for starters and were given three pieces each!

A wedge of iceberg lettuce with a choice of dressings was served before the steak. I chose a Stilton and blue cheese dressing which I loved.

All steaks are served with seasoned fries, parsley butter, a slice of onion loaf and a balsamic glazed beef tomato.

I decided to have an 8oz Fillet Steak, medium rare, with the British Beef dripping sauce recommended by Alex. My steak was delicious, so tender and it just melted in my mouth, the beef dripping sauce was really tasty as was the onion loaf and fries.

My daughter chose the Bacon and honey mustard dressing for her wedge which Alex had recommended and she really enjoyed it. She followed this with an 8oz sirloin, but could have had 12oz, with Calvados peppercorn sauce. Another delicious steak.

My granddaughter chose Fish and Chips from the children’s menu and finished it in no time, she said it was really good and she had really enjoyed it.

Both my daughter and I were struggling to finish off our meals so decided to concentrate on the steaks rather than the accompaniments.

The dessert menu looked delicious but we were too full to manage one. Maybe no starter next time!

My granddaughter of course could manage a dessert and chose strawberry ice cream served with a cookie and chocolate sauce. She found a whole strawberry in the middle of her ice cream. Even she was defeated by two scoops of ice cream and could not finish it all!

On the Miller & Carter website it suggested they could be one of the best Steakhouses in Hertfordshire, surely they must be the best!

I can certainly recommend the Miller & Carter Restaurant in Wheathampstead and will definitely be going back. Alex and his staff were really attentive to us and all the other diners on a very busy lunchtime.

Although we chose to eat from the main menu, they also offer a fixed price menu which is available Monday to Saturday between certain times, but please check their website for the times this menu is available.

This is certainly an excellent restaurant with fantastic food. I can thoroughly recommend it, but it would be advisable to book.
