I am a parent of two primary aged school children. My son is nearly 6 and my daughter is nearly 9. My husband is a secondary school teacher so the importance of education is high in our household. We were gifted an ages 6-9 – Love Writing Co. Better Writing Pack for my kids. First of all, it’s probably best to describe what’s in the pack, which is sold on the lovewritingco.com website for £21.99. It contains:
– Pack of 5 Writing Pencils
– Pack of 12 Erasable Colouring Pencils
– Handwriting and Alphabet Practice Stage 2: Book 1
– Love Writing Co. Eraser Sharpener
– Eco Gym Bag
– Linden Wood – light yet strong
– Responsibly sourced – fully FSC Certified
– Endorsed by The British Dyslexia Association

The gym bag that we received was a lovely bright purple back that is very handy to keep everything together so that you can take it places with you, trips, holidays when you have a rainy day or just for storing the pack together.

Given that it’s an educational review item, I wasn’t sure my kids would be that interested but both of them were very interested and wanted to open everything straight away. Everything was so colourful so very attractive them, the book cover, the pencils, even the boxes the pencils came in. They opened everything up and got stuck in straight away. They coloured the pictures at the bottom of the page, practices some of the writing and flicked through every page with excitement. The pages are on good quality paper, and definitely feel ‘proper’, especially when you compare them to the cheap, thin papered ones that you can pick up in budget supermarkets.

The stationary that comes with the pack are equally as well made as the book. The coloured pencils, and the writing pencils are perfectly, ergonomically designed for young hands. They are thicker than the usual HB pencils that children use which allows them to have a better grip and control of their colouring and writing. They are also a good length to fit in their hands. Impressively, the colour pencils are erasable too which was a new concept to my youngest who is just at the age where he is perfecting ‘colouring in the lines’. Not only are the pencils great in shape and size, but they are made from responsibly sourced linden wood, so a bonus on the eco front too!

As the pencils are thicker than the usual ones we are used to, you don’t need to worry about sharpening them as the pack contains an appropriate sharpener. And it’s not just a sharpener, it’s a robust 2 in 1 eraser sharpener which also seems to have been designed for little hands in mind. I think out of the entire pack, this was my son’s favourite item! It is a lovely chunky bright green eraser sharpener.

As this book is designed for 6-9 years old, it isn’t aimed to get children used to writing and making shapes, it designed to get children to practice cursive (joined up) writing. Although both of my kids for this range, I think my very nearly 6 year old is slightly too young for this book. He has just started year 1 so it still at the stage of perfecting his tripod grip and getting to know his alphabet in written form, but this may be due to the fact that he has missed 6 months of school due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I almost wish I knew of these books in lockdown as a 3-5yr old book for my son and this 6-9 yr old book for my daughter, together with a pack of pencils and colouring pencil would have been ideal for home-schooling whilst my husband and I worked from home.

However, for me, I think that now that we are back at school and my son is at the age where his home work is reading, but my daughter has ‘proper’ homework, rather than him sitting and watching tv whilst I her help, this set would be ideal for him to sit along side her so that he can practise his writing. And because he has found the book so colourful and exciting, he won’t see it as a chore. He has already started on the first few pages which are based on tracing and single letter formations. I can always buy the 3-5 book from the website to carry this on with him, and save the rest of the 6-9 book for when he is ready to do the cursive writing.

They are great packs for young kids who will improve on the their writing without them feeling like the are doing homework.
