I was delighted to get picked for this review opportunity, as if you ask my small people “Mummy is a pirate, she drinks rum”. Therefore I was very happy to be offered a new flavour to try of an evening. A perfect tipple to add to the Halloween table, especially if pirates are making a guest appearance, or to add to the cocktails, after all pumpkin, spice and Halloween do go hand in hand.
Project #173 do a wide range of flavoured rums from black cherry to chocolate, gingerbread to smoked chilli and the delicious bottle that I have Pumpkin Spice.
It is described as the ultimate autumn flavour, a warming medley of spices, think gingerbread and pepper cookies, cola, zesty orange and brown sugar.
So let’s get to delivery, the bottle arrived extremely well packaged in a postal bottle bubble bag – sure that’s not the technical term but hopefully you understand, then slotted into a well-fitting box branded by Master of Malt. Delivery was a smooth easy transaction with royal mail and the customary photo at the door.
On to the bottle, the bottle is stunning, well worth putting in your liquor cupboard hall of fame, it is a gorgeous bottle fitting of any apothecary cupboard or high class cocktail bar. With it’s angular looks, striking white label, silver cap and flash of orange with gold leaf embedded on the front, it truly is a statement of the best kind. I could imagine a whole shelf of the different flavours being incredibly stunning and worth sampling!
So the taste, let me set the scene first, it was a cold grey, typically damp English evening, autumn at its finest, breeze blowing through the trees, the few leaves left on the branches a beautiful hue of golden bronze through to crisp autumnal browns. Leaves underfoot, some with that satisfying crunch and some with the sodden squelch you expect in England in October! The colder weather incoming and the darker evenings looming in, the feeling you get when you arrive home and are chilly with a damp hue and you just want to dry off and have a warming drink. Open the bottle and take that first anticipated smell, you notice the hints of cinnamon, like apple pie or cinnamon rolls. Into the glass a beautiful pour of golden goodness, it is an incredibly inviting looking drink. The first taste is really of pumpkin spice, you can taste all of those autumnal flavours, the spice is truly there and the warming smooth rum is also delicious. It truly is a drink to warm you on a cold evening. Delicious on its own or made into a deliciously warming rum cocktail.
The flavour is strong, so if you aren’t ready to get hit very hard by autumn it might not be the one for you, it leaves a pleasant, sweet aftertaste and goes down very easily. The flavours of cinnamon and cloves are very present and I would say are the most noticeable flavours, they aren’t subtle, paired with the warmth of the rum it is certainly a drink for the colder months of the year.
If you are looking for a stunning drink to add to your Halloween party, for those winter warming cocktails or even as a special gift for someone, I don’t think you could go far wrong for a rum lover.
