Easily the most played with toy in our house for two years now, Magna-tiles are loved by my pre-schooler, myself and my husband, the grandparents, and most visitors to our house! They’ve been a tremendous hit! Judging from our visits to friends’ houses they’ve become a staple for most families with kids. The 28 piece House set particularly appealed to us as houses are my daughter’s favourite thing to build and we’ve been limited to using standard tiles for doors. Not anymore!

This brightly coloured 28 piece set comes with:
• 2 rectangles
• 6 squares
• 13 triangles
• 2 “C” shapes
• 2 “T” shapes
• 2 staircases
• 1 door
• 1 set of reusable stickers

In our set we had various bright colours including a hot pink triangle which my daughter was particularly taken with having owned the standard colour palette for two years. It also comes with some transparent tiles that are ideal for creating windows for your constructions. The swinging door is brilliant and we found a secondary use as a flap on a car ramp. The most revolutionary pieces in the set are the C and T shapes and it took us some time to understand how these are best used. This is mostly because they only have magnets at one end. I love that Magna-Tiles has creative ideas on their website and designs that you can copy so if you find yourself in need of a pointer there’s plenty of inspiration.

It’s great that this set comes with two staircases in different colours so that you can build multilevel abodes or include wide staircases. Without the stairs the set wouldn’t have truly felt like a house and they’re my favourite addition to our collection. The open ended imaginative play from the tiles and from this set in particular is so impressive and can occupy my daughter for longer than anything else. I’d really like to see Magna-Tiles introduce some magnetic human figures to their range in the future.

I was unsure how practical the reusable stickers would be when I opened the box. We built our first house together and once we were happy with our design we turned to the sheet of stickers. I’m really impressed with the quality of them and they feel incredibly durable. There are various items of furniture which you can apply to both the walls and to the floor. They allow you to create zones or rooms within your house and there are also garden items such as balls and bikes, and external decorations such as a post box.

If you’re looking for an engaging toy this Christmas, these really tick the box. They’re brilliant for offering both educational and creative play simultaneously, whilst avoiding the flashing lights and music (and endless batteries) of so many toys available these days. The 28 pieces felt a little limited on their own and we copied the images shown on the box, but their real value is when they supplement a classic set to make the options endless. If purchasing for Christmas and your budget allows I would suggest supplementing with an additional set. With an Amazon review rating of 4.8 we aren’t alone in our enjoyment of this set, and whoever is lucky enough to receive these as a gift will be similarly delighted. Magna-Tiles have a recommended age of three years plus.
