Following a hugely successful nationwide tour in 2014 the nation’s favourite choir master Gareth Malone will be embarking on his biggest tour to date this winter with his choir ‘Voices’.
Early in 2013 Gareth began a UK-wide hunt to find the country’s most talented young singers to form a new youth choir. This culminated in Gareth Malone’s Voices, an album embodying his vision of the future of choral music. An acclaimed sold UK tour soon followed and now Gareth with Voices will be back this November and December in what’s set to be an eclectic mix of some of the UK’s favourite contemporary tracks, festive songs plus a few surprises all with the finest choral and innovative arrangements.
Apart from a 19 date upcoming tour, 2015 has been another memorable year. Gareth’s current TV project, The Naked Choir on BBC 2 saw him searching for Britain’s most entertaining amateur singing group, in a music contest with a difference – groups must sing a cappella. Apart from seeing the groups perform contemporary tracks in different musical styles; the show has been capturing audiences online with viral videos, some reaching over 100k views in a week.
2015 also marks 10 years since Gareth Malone recorded his first show, the three-part BBC documentary series The Choir. The series saw Gareth take on the challenge of bringing music into the lives of students who had never sung before and ultimately taking them to compete in the World Choir Games in China.
Following on from the success of series two, The Choir: Boys Don’t Sing, Gareth’s third series The Choir: Unsung Town saw him attempt to unite the community of South Oxhey near Watford as a choir. The fourth series of The Choir aired in November 2011. In his most emotional challenge to date, The Choir: Military Wives, saw Gareth give a voice to the wives and girlfriends left behind at the Chivenor and Plymouth barracks when troops were deployed to Afghanistan. The hit single from the series, Wherever You Are, was a resounding success, making Christmas number one in 2011, and the choir’s album, In My Dreams, went to number one in March 2012. A second album, Stronger Together, was released in November 2012. Gareth also released the official Diamond Jubilee song Sing composed by Gary Barlow and performed by The Military Wives Choir.
Last year alone Gareth was involved in two very different projects commemorating the centenary of World War One. The Big Performance for CBBC culminated with a performance at St Symphorien and Gareth conducted his first ever Prom with the Military Wives Choir alongside performers from War Horse. Plus along with his All Star Choir, Gareth reached number one with this year’s Children in Need single ‘Wake Me Up’ which was documented in a two part series on BBC1.
Since his first show aired in 2006, all the successful series have led to seven BAFTA nominations, winning two successive BAFTA awards and two RTS awards.
