The girls and I love to cook up a treat or two so I was more than happy to volunteer to review a Little Cooks Co award-winning, cooking kit.  We’ve tried a few monthly baking subscription boxes and this one’s USP is its healthy recipes. Now admittedly, whilst we’re pretty good at balancing our diets, ultimately we’re a family of sweet-tooths. I was interested to see how my two marshmallow monsters would find this month’s healthy take on Rocky Road. I popped the finished product in their Lunch Boxes that they took to half-term Art Camp. Eldest daughter scoffed the lot whilst youngest daughter only had a nibble. Mr H requested more; declaring them ‘perfect post-ride pick me ups’ after a demanding pedal. I couldn’t resist a nibble and I too found them satisfyingly tasty. The dates added fantastic chew factor.

Each monthly subscription box comes with a recipe and all the dry, organic, ingredients needed to make that month’s healthy bake, carefully packaged in compostable bags. The boxes fit nicely through the letterbox and are prettily packaged. The girls enjoyed having a good root through the little packets and discovering the fun extras included. Our box came with a fruit-themed, picture crossword, a word game and the girls’ favourite – a  question designed to fire up their imaginations.  I’ll share it with you now: ‘If you were an ice-cream what flavour would you be and why?’

Amongst the ingredients there was also a packet of seeds and as keen gardeners (by that, I mean, they’ve grown cress to top their pizzas with), the girls were excited to learn they’d be growing their own Basil. An accompanying info card helped me attempt to educate them a little about the origins of food, whilst an extra recipe card detailing a savoury family meal will be one I can persuade the girls to give a go; their basil both an ingredient and a bribe!

There was a collectable sticker – which I believe if you subscribe is a monthly marker to add to a little record book you receive, encouraging young eaters to track their baking journey. Just the kind of thing kids love.

Our Little Cooks Co. box certainly provided an easy, fun and healthy activity for the kids. I’m not sure if they were a little disappointed that the recipe saw the ingredients going in the fridge rather than the oven. They quite like seeing the pre to post bake transformation and this simple recipe excluded that little bit of magic. They did however like following the recipe, finding and adding the right ingredients and stirring, spooning and spreading the mixture.

The Little Cooks Co. Boxes are cute and convenient and thus make both a fantastic monthly treat for your own budding cooks and a unique gift. I love a kid’s present that doesn’t require a shuffle around of the toy cupboard to find space; and if I get a tasty treat out of it too, that’s always an added bonus!

Subscription plans start at £8.33 per box and run for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. 3, 6 or 12 month Gift Plans are also available. The longer you subscribe for, the better the saving. I’d perhaps recommend trying one and if you like what you receive, then make a longer-term commitment.

As a family who love a good pudding, I try my best to educate the girls about making healthy food choices – and these boxes are a great aid. With all the ingredients included, the kit offers a super convenient baking activity. They keep the kids’ entertained and provide a means for engaging in a spot of family, foodie fun.

Whilst this month’s recipe wasn’t quite the hit I would have hoped for with the sprogs (no complaints from Mr H), I’d certainly give Little Cooks Co. another shot. Healthy snacks that really appeal to kids are hard to come by and I’m a believer that if you can get them to make their own food, children are more likely to try new (and healthier) foods.

A lot of thought has clearly gone into the creation of this recipe box subscription and every effort is made to engage little ones. For the convenience, the added treats and the quality of the products, I’d certainly say the boxes are perfectly priced. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a gift subscription for a child; I think I’ve ‘box-ed’ off the Christmas Presents for the younger members of the family this year.
