Learning Resources Lights and Sounds Buzzers Review

Reviewed by David Savage

With 5-year-old twins that are slightly delayed and behind their peers at school I am always looking for things to help improve their education, before they go into Year 1, in a fun way. When asked to review the Lights and Sounds Buzzers from Learning Resources I couldn’t see what educational value they would have. I soon found out that they can be used in conjunction with other learning games and toys and make learning that bit more fun.

In the box, there are four buzzers that each measure 9cm (3.5”) in diameter, each one is a different colour; blue, green, red and yellow. Each buzzer requires 2xAAA (not supplied) and has its own unique sound (buzzer, charge, laser and siren). Each buzzer also features our non-slip feet, so the buzzers stay firmly on the desk without slipping away when pressed.

Part of the boys’ speech and language sessions are to encourage them to listen and take turns, these buzzers are great for helping them to wait and take their turns while playing games. They love that the buzzers not only light up but make a sound at the same time.

We have been using the buzzers with games like Orchard Toys Crocodile Snap (using the buzzer when having to say snap) and Orchard Toys Shopping List (when they match a card to their shopping list they press the buzzer). We have also been using it with some of their phonics books, I will read something from the book and ask them a question about one of the sounds and the first one to press gets to answer, this seems to engage them more than just asking a question.

While we have been using it at home to good effect I can see how this would be a valuable tool in the classroom for the same reasons, and for tests/quizzes.

We think these are a great idea for at home or school, and can have so many uses, but the only thing I would say is as they require 8xAAA batteries, invest in a battery charger and some rechargeable batteries.

A fantastic idea, simple yet effective. Recommend as suitable for ages 4-8 I can’t see any reason they can’t be used beyond that.
