‘Kinky Boots’, a show packed with glamour and drama, is currently wowing audiences at the Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent. Based on true events and originally created as a film in 2005 by Geoff Deanne and Time Forth, this UK tour has music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper.

Charlie Price is a young man who has unwittingly inherited a struggling shoe factory from his father. Initially wanting to get rid of the business, an accidental encounter with drag queen Lola inspires him to take the company in a whole new direction. Charlie’s fiancée Nicola is reluctant to support him, as she is keen to move to London where she feels they will have a higher status in society.

While all the vocals were strong, Kayi Ushe, playing Lola, was the most captivating performer. I also enjoyed the energy of the cast singing ‘Sex is in the heel’ with lots of high kicks from Lola’s angels. Demitri Lampra, as factory worker Don, was a great supporting character whose insecurities are confronted during a well-choreographed boxing match. The props and scenery are cleverly managed, so the stage quickly changes from the conveyor belts in the shoe factory to the sumptuous drag show.

I found myself mesmerised by this outstanding performance, which explores the issues of tolerance and self-acceptance. The cast did a fantastic job capturing the varying emotions through song from the entrancing ‘Land of Lola’ through to the emotional ‘Hold me in your heart’. Charlie and Lola’s characters give a great insight into the risks taken when you have to choose to rebel or conform. Without giving too much away, the final scene was the perfect ending to a superb show and made everyone leave with a smile on their face.

The Regent Theatre is located in the Hanley area of Stoke-on-Trent with plenty of public car parks nearby. The staff were friendly and helpful with the handy opportunity to pre-order drinks for the interval. Many audience members enjoyed the chance to have their picture taken wearing the fabulous red heels synonymous with the show.

Kinky Boots is an excellent production and definitely worth seeing again and again.
