Following the pandemic, like many families we have been keen to get away. I was therefore extremely pleased to have been allocated items from the JETKIDS BY STOKKE range to allow us to travel in style. Already a fan of the Stokke brand (we have the Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair, bought independently when our first child was born), I couldn’t wait to for these items to arrive. When they did, the packaging was simple, arriving in a carboard box. This review will focus on the JETKIDS BY STOKKE BedBox, however we also received the JETKIDS BY STOKKE CLOUDSLEEPER travel bed (please see the separate review for this product). The BedBox itself had a wrap around card slip with lots of details on it. No unnecessary packaging or plastic in sight and no damage in transit. The items within the case were held in a plastic bag which, although labelled as recyclable, could have been made from recycled plastic.
On first sight, the BedBox is a stylish ride on suitcase which in itself is a great item to have when going away with young children. However, the name ‘BedBox’ gives away that it is designed to be much more than this. Stokke have developed the ‘only ride on suitcase that turns any seat into a bed’ apparently in just ‘5 simple steps.’ From experimenting, this does happen easily, by removing the lid (done by pushing in the buttons either side), turning it upside down before placing it back on, and then pulling out the extenders. The included mattress (hand washable) then covers the extended section plus the seat base itself, creating a comfy looking mini bed. Stokke state that the BedBox and seat aspect have been ‘officially approved by airlines’ (there is a long list of the exact airlines this includes) and has been designed to fit a standard economy seat. Not only for planes however, the seat can be used to create a bed when travelling by train or ferry as well, how clever! The Stokke website also claims to keep safety in mind, stating that seatbelts can sit be used when this bed function is in place with your child either sitting or lying down.
The ride on suitcase itself, is easily pulled about even by little hands. It comes with a detachable handle and the smoothness of the wheels is really noticeable, allowing the case to glide around without tipping over. My child has already had great delight in pulling this about and not once has it fallen over or been tricky for him to manoeuvre around a corner. From looking at the website, it seems this smoothness is down to ‘shock absorbing front swivel wheels’. The handle itself is designed to be shortened or lengthened to easily allow you to carry or pull the case. Whilst about half of the main compartment is taken up with the mattress, there is still plenty of space for your child to keep their favourite toys, a few snacks and a change of clothes. Of course if for whatever reason you do not need to use the seat aspect, the mattress could be kept safely at home, allowing lots of space for your child to pack (the overall internal volume is 20 litres). The current design of the BedBox also has a new feature of some storage in the lid section (behind the seat converter part) so it does feel like there is ample overall. The external design features also include a fabric handle for your child to hold onto whilst riding, and foot ledges within the sides for little feet to rest. Key with travelling is size and weight; Stokke have done a great job in creating a good size case 46 x 30 x 36 cm) whilst being extremely light weight (only 3kg!).
I was lucky enough to have been able to choose the colour of the case itself, and chose the ‘green aurora’ option which is a lovely shade of sage to mint like green. This option comes with the details, like handles and feet, in a light grey which goes very well. Other colours available are ‘full moon’ (a cream with orange detailing), ‘lunar eclipse’ (black with orange detailing), ‘golden olive’ (dark green with orange and grey detailing), ‘pink lemonade’ (pale pink with grey detailing) and ‘blue sky’ (pale blue with orange and grey detailing). To be honest I could have chosen any of the colours as the tones are beautiful and I loved how many gender neutral options there were. Even the brighter colour options were stylish in the design and tone, not at all like many children’s brightly coloured items. Your child will certainly stand out in a good way pulling or riding on one of these around the airport. Each item comes with two sheets of travel related and alphabet stickers, a great idea to allow your child to personalise their own case and provide an activity for them at the same time (possibly giving you some time to pack!).
Also available in the JETKIDS BY STOKKE range is the CLOUDSLEEPER (please see separate review of this item). This inflatable travel bed pairs well with the BedBox, sorting all your child’s sleeping arrangements for your holiday. This item is available to buy via https://www.stokke.com/GBR/en-gb/travel/jetkids/5846.html and has an RRP of £89.
The BedBox itself is designed for children from 3 to 7 years old. I was a little unsure why younger toddlers couldn’t use it either so think it may extended slightly younger. I wish however they did these for adults! I love the stylish design and colour options, the dual design function of a ride on suitcase and seat to bed converter and ease of use. I am therefore giving the Stokke Jetkids BedBox my second ever rating of 5 out of 5 stars!
